BLACKPINK’s Lisa is one of the biggest names in K-pop, with a global fan base and massive influence. However, her journey has also come with controversies. One major issue involved old videos of the singer using the N-word while practising rap covers. The old clips resurfaced online in 2025 and sparked widespread backlash. The ‘Rockstar’ singer has now addressed the controversy in her feature-length documentary Always Lalisa. Read on to know more about it.
The videos that sparked the controversy were reportedly recorded more than a decade ago. They showed the future BLACKPINK members practising their rap skills by covering songs by other artists. Some of these songs included the racial slur in their lyrics.

The clips surfaced online in spring 2025, shortly before Lisa was set to make her solo debut at Coachella. Their release led to criticism, with many people questioning the singer’s use of the offensive word.
In Always Lalisa, the K-pop idol explained that the videos were part of the monthly practice evaluations trainees had to submit to their company. She said she had been asked to perform rap covers and did not understand the cultural weight of the word at the time.
Lisa also spoke about growing up in Thailand, where English was not her first language. She explained that she had not received an education about the history and sensitivity surrounding the racial slur during her early training years. However, she did not dismiss the issue. She admitted that her actions were wrong and expressed regret over what had happened. Lisa added that she would never use the word now because she understands why it is offensive.
