BLACKPINK’s Rosé made history yesterday at the VMAs by becoming the first K-pop idol to win Song Of The Year for her chart-topping song ‘APT’ featuring Bruno Mars. The BLACKPINK member released her iconic song APT back in October 2024, and it became an instant hit as soon as it was released. Now, Rosé accepted the prestigious award at the VMAs and gave an emotional speech. Read on to know more.
BLACKPINK’s Rosé Becomes The First K-Pop Idol To Win Song Of The Year At The VMAs
BLACKPINK’s Rosé was awarded the trophy for Song Of The Year at the VMAs last night, held at New York’s UBS Arena. The singer attended the award ceremony looking radiant, dressed in a butter yellow shimmery Oscar De La Renta gown.
In her VMA acceptance speech, Rosé thanked collaborator Bruno Mars for believing in and supporting her. She also dedicated the award to her 16-year-old self and thanked herself for never fearing to dream big. In her speech, the BLACKPINK member said, “Twelve years later, I dedicate this award to my 16-year-old self who dreamed. And to all those who watched me grow into the artist I am today and placed their dreams in me to make this change… Every single one of you has put me here and now, I believe there is no imposter in the world when MTV has given me this award here at the VMAs”.

BLACKPINK’s Rosé also went on to thank her record labels, Atlantic Records and The Black Label. In a heartfelt moment, she also extended her gratitude to her BLACKPINK members, Jennie, Jisoo and Lisa. This remarkable achievement is extremely important as Rosé has now become the only K-pop act to win the award. BTS’ Dynamite was also nominated in the category back in 2021, but they couldn’t secure the trophy.
Released on October 18, 2024, APT received major success by charting at No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200 for multiple weeks. APT also became the fastest Asian Act music video to reach 1 billion views on YouTube, and the fastest song by a K-pop artist to reach 1 billion streams on Spotify.
