The BLACKPINK girls, especially Rosé, Jennie and Lisa, have had a momentous year in terms of music. From Rosé’s hit song APT featuring Bruno Mars to Jennie’s LIKE JENNIE, which made everyone groove their hips to the catchy beat. Fans were excitedly waiting to see the members now be nominated for the GRAMMYs after achieving many #1s on charts and breaking multiple records globally. However, the fandom was left disappointed by a recent nomination clause for the GRAMMYs. Read on to know more!
Why BLACKPINK Members Will Not Be Eligible For The Best New Artist Category At The GRAMMYs
A wave of criticism and disappointment has been generated after it was revealed that the BLACKPINK members will not be eligible for the GRAMMYs ‘Best New Artist’ category. This comes as a shock because neither the group nor the members have ever been nominated in a GRAMMY category before. But according to an industry source, the Recording Academy reportedly considers the BLACKPINK members disqualified due to their prior recognition as part of a successful group.
This revelation has angered many people, especially international fans who think that all the BLACKPINK members have released well-received solo projects this past year that deserve to be recognised by the GRAMMYs and the Recording Academy. Rosé’s APT debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, and LIKE JENNIE became the most streamed song by a female artist in 2025, surpassing Lady Gaga’s Abracadabra. Lisa’s Rockstar and Jisoo’s Earthquake also sparked buzz in the international music scene. BLACKPINK has not only demonstrated individual musical growth but also performed these songs live during their recent DEADLINE tour.
Critics of the GRAMMY’s decision also point out the award show’s double standard. Many highlighted how Western artists with previous long-standing careers, like Sabrina Carpenter, have been awarded the Best New Artist award. The artist had released multiple albums over the past decade before being given this award, and still she was eligible for the category.
The entire situation has started a conversation about racial bias in the prestigious award ceremony. BLACKPINK fans have called this rule exclusionary and outdated, with many arguing that group recognition should not cancel out an individual’s solo accomplishments.
This is not the first time that GRAMMYs have been accused of racism. The awards also caught flak for allegedly leaving out and disrespecting the famous K-pop boy band BTS in the past.
