Oh, are you a Billie Eilish fan? This film is a treat! Are you not? Then you will be after watching the film! Co-directed by James Cameron, I stepped into the theatre with little knowledge of what this concert film would be about. I wanted to be surprised, but I left feeling more than that. Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard And Soft is on multiple levels, an experience that stays with us. It’s not just the young singer’s popular songs that hit all the right spots; it’s also the brief, honest and hearty conversations, drenched in all the fan love, that led me to a newfound respect for Billie Eilish. If these words were not enough to convince you, then go on and read this quick review.

James Cameron and Billie Eilish give the fans an unforgettable concert experience in the movie Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard And Soft. The 2-hour film is about the last concert of this tour, but it takes us through the madness that goes behind executing such a large-scale concert. After each song, James Cameron asks Billie Eilish some intriguing questions about her creative process, her personal life battles, her love for fans and vice versa, and her sweet sibling bond with brother Finneas.

Why It’s A Good Film?

The film genuinely moved me, and this feeling was something that I did not see coming. I am not a Billie Eilish, but I do have some of her songs on my favourites playlist. The concert film Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard And Soft became an immersive experience for me soon after the singer sang ‘Bad Guy’. In no time, I felt like the fan who had known Billie for years and had connected with her journey through the songs and their lyrics. There was such a perfect balance of songs and the story. It blended so well that the concert songs became a part of the storytelling, and the story took a lyrical form, even when it was just two people talking.

A concert film cannot tell you much about the artist. I would disagree up front. After watching the James Cameron film, I became more curious about Billie Eilish. It just blows my mind to think about how a young singer used her songs, her story, to connect with so many people. I still find myself thinking about the bit where her fans spoke their heart out on how neither family nor therapy, but only Billie’s songs, helped them through tough times. These moments are so honest and emotional that, whether you are a fan or not, they force you to think about the wonders that a sincere artist is capable of. I am a little more aware of Billie Eilish’s strong morals as a singer, the fact that she wanted to change the stereotypes associated with a woman’s body, and be a pop artist that broke the rules of how she should be on the stage. Billie Eilish made herself so capable that she knowingly and unknowingly, she made many teens and adults confident in their own skin.

Billie Eilish’s love for dogs and puppies touched my heart. And as she said, “Everybody needs some dog love.” James Cameron beautifully captures the world of Billie Eilish, her songs, and her fandom, and the artist’s raw self! It’s a memorable concert film for sure!

What’s Not Great?

TBH, I was invested in the film throughout. However, in the initial few minutes, I found myself struggling to concentrate. This could also be because I did not know the songs well. For the fans, this would definitely not be a problem. I was mostly distracted in bits and parts as I could not keep up with the lyrics, but despite that, the film had me with her stunning music and immersive cinematography. It’s definitely for a niche audience!
