Exclusive: “Casting Director Said I Won’t Make It Big As I’m Not Dating A Celeb”: Soundarya Sharma

Casting couch is the reality of the entertainment industry that just cannot be denied, no matter what. But no one displays this predatory behaviour outright. It’s usually done in a subtle manner where the predator makes the prey feel inferior before making any suggestions. In episode 36 of Hauterrfly’s The Male Feminist, Bigg Boss 16 star Soundarya Sharma recalled an incident when a leading casting director made her feel inferior and bad.

Speaking about facing the casting couch, Soundary Sharma said, “I have been asked out for coffee and I’ve got text messages at night. And if you don’t give in toh aapko next audition ke liye call nahi aayega aur aapko entertain nahi kiya jayega. People would tell me to my face to act dumb. In fact, once a very big casting director told me that ‘oh, you’re not dating any actor, producer or star kid. What do you think? Just being pretty, hot, intelligent and your doctor’s degree will help you become star here?’. This is a trap to make you feel small and inferior. At that point in time, I had tears in my eyes and I couldn’t speak and for 3 months I was feeling devastated.”

The Bigg Boss 16 star shared that she cried a lot after that incident and was unable to share it with anyone as she had to show her family that she was strong. She said she couldn’t show her vulnerability even if she wanted because of how she was seen as a strong, elegant person. Soundarya Sharma shared that she shook herself and reminded herself that she knew this was going to happen and she needs to stop being a victim and living in denial and stay strong.
