Galaxy Corporation Releases Statement About G-Dragon’s MAMA Performance

G-Dragon’s MAMA performance has been under scrutiny since it aired. People criticised it for being out of tune and for the singer relying too much on AR. The situation got worse when G-Dragon himself commented a thumbs-down emoji on the performance video posted by the MAMA’s official account.

The singer performed his songs DRAMA,’ ‘Heartbreaker,’ and ‘Untitled’ at the November 29 ceremony held at Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Stadium. G-Dragon took home four awards, including Artist of the Year; however, reactions to his performance are deeply divided. People criticised his vocal performance and how the K-pop missed the high notes several times, and also said the choreography performed was not up to the mark.

On December 1st, G-Dragon’s company, Galaxy Corporation, issued a statement regarding the situation. They said that the idol’s performance was completely changed after the devastating Hong Kong fire tragedy. The agency revealed that G-Dragon intentionally opted for a restrained performance instead of a flashy one to convey comfort and solidarity. They also emphasised that he made a donation of 1 million HKD to support recovery efforts.

However, despite the explanation, netizens’ reaction remains split. Many argue that the tragedy or the low-key performance set-up does not excuse the quality of G-Dragon’s vocals. While the idol’s fans defended him by saying that, considering the situation, his performance made sense since it focused more on the message rather than the spectacle.
