In a statement from Mattel, this new Barbie is all a part of the company’s continued effort to mirror real-world diversity and build understanding through play. The company is hoping that by releasing a doll with an illness, they can foster more inclusive storytelling and inspire children to be more empathetic.
Krista Berger, Mattel’s senior VP of Barbie and global head of dolls, stressed that Barbie is very important in how kids start making sense of the world. She said that featuring dolls with various life scenarios allows kids to envision a world where everybody is included, particularly those living with diseases like type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic disease where the body fails to make insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar. It usually starts in children or teenagers and needs to be controlled every day with insulin injections and glucose checks.
Karen Addington, Breakthrough T1D UK CEO, welcomed the new doll and said it sends a very powerful message of empowerment. She said the doll is particularly important for children with diabetes because it provides them with someone to identify with when playing, and it lessens feelings of isolation.
For the unversed, Barbie also partnered up with Warner Bros for a movie titled Barbie with Margot Robbie as the lead star.
