Popular K-pop idol and actor Cha Eun Woo is in the middle of a big controversy. The National Tax Service is investigating the ASTRO member for tax evasion. Cha Eun Woo was told that he must pay more than 20 billion Korean won, which is about 123–124.6 crore INR, in extra taxes that were not paid before. Read on to know more about it.
Cha Eun Woo Hit With Massive 13.7 Million USD Tax Fraud Allegations
On January 22, news reports said the Seoul tax office looked closely at Cha Eunwoo’s earnings from the first half of 2025. They suspect he set up a company with his mother and then made a contract with his agency, Fantagio. This way, some of his money was taxed at just 20% (like a company rate) instead of the higher personal income tax rate.
They are currently looking at how his income came through three ways. The tax team suspects that Cha Eunwoo might have avoided paying up to 20 billion KRW (about 123–124.6 crore INR) by routing some earnings through that company and paying the lower tax rate on it.
However, the K-pop idol and actor’s side is fighting back. They asked for another look at the findings and said the company is a real, registered entertainment business and not just a fake one on paper.
According to their statement, Fantagio said the main question is whether the company his mom started really counts as a proper taxable business. They made it clear that nothing is decided yet and no final amount or notice has been given. The agency plan to explain everything properly using the right legal steps.
