Arijit Singh announced to the world that he would be quitting playback singing late on January 27, 2026, shocking fans everywhere. The singer has been a renowned name in the industry for years now. He rose to fame following his heart wrenching rendition of ‘Tum Hi Ho’ from Aashiqui 2 in 2013. After his sudden declaration on his official Instagram account, he clarified on a private X account (formerly Twitter) that he would not stop being a musician; instead, he would refocus and return to his classical roots. He also wants to focus on his directorial debut, as per reports.
Arijit Singh Explains Why He Is Retiring From Playback Singing
The 38-year-old singer has done playback for many of our favourite stars, including Shah Rukh Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor, and Ranveer Singh. However, he has decided to hang up his hat, citing multiple reasons for the same. Exhaustion, boredom, and the need to “explore different music to thrive” top the list.
On his private X account, Singh continued that he wanted to open opportunities for newer singers who could “inspire him genuinely.” He assured fans that he “won’t stop making music,” and asked for their support moving forward, “as a small little artist.” He thanked God for being kind to him, and affirmed that he had some commitments left, so fans could expect new releases this year. Returning to classical music is on his agenda, he stated, adding that he wants to “start again.”
A source close to the singer also hinted at Singh wanting to focus on his film as a first-time director for a year before he resumes singing, as told to a news website.
