Anushka Sharma Files Petition In High Court Against Being Wrongfully Taxed

An actor’s life is not at all as easy as it looks. With the huge influx of money, there also comes huge responsibility for being on the right side of the law. Every penny has to be accountable and made to show that it is also hard-earned and not black. Recently, Anushka Sharma has been served an order by the Sales Tax Department that has taxed the actress as a performer. She has filed petitions in the Bombay High Court requesting the bench to quash this order.

As per reports, Anushka Sharma has come to believe that she was taxed higher than an actor/performer would be. She has filed petitions for the time between 2012-2013, and 2013-2014. Last week, the Chakda Xpress actor had to file fresh petitions after the High Court, in December last year, had dismissed her tax consultant’s appeal wherein they had challenged the Sales Tax department’s orders. The HC asked why couldn’t Anushka file the plea herself.

In her petition, Sharma has said that she was a performer at award ceremonies and has acted in films as a performer in agreement with her agent Yash Raj Films and other organisers. Anushka clarified in her petition that she was not charged as a performer but on the basis of product endorsements and hosting award ceremonies.

Initially, in 2012-2013, the 34-year-old actress was asked to pay Rs 1.2 crore but that amount increased to Rs 1.6 crore in 2013-2014. She also clarified the confusion by writing that the sales tax officer has mistakenly understood that by hosting award shows and endorsing products, she had acquired the rights and even sold them. Which was not the case. As Anushka pointed out that the rights to the video remain with the producer only.

She also put down a strong point writing that unless it is made abundantly clear that there has been a sale of products/rights, she cannot be taxed for it. The HC has directed the sales department to reply to her petition and the case will now be heard again on February 6.

Meanwhile, on the work front, Anushka Sharma is gearing up for the release of her film Chakda Xpress which is based on the life of Indian cricket player Jhulan Goswami.
