Americans Call Out CBFC For Cutting 33-Second Kissing Scene In Superman. We’re Not Disagreeing!

James Gunn’s Superman may be soaring high at the global box office with a smashing 200 million-plus debut weekend, but in India, the buzz isn’t just about the film’s success. Instead, it’s the unexpected censorship of a romantic scene that’s got both Indian and American audiences scratching their heads. Read to know more details on the same.

Americans Baffled At CBFC Censoring The Kissing Scene In Superman

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in India has edited out portions of a kiss between Superman (David Corenswet) and Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), sparking widespread criticism. A kiss that originally lasted over 30 seconds was trimmed down to just a few fleeting moments. Additionally, several curse words throughout the film were muted.

While the film earned more than 4 million in India during its first four days, the focus quickly shifted to this surprising censorship choice. Many viewers in India took to social media to call out what they saw as an outdated and overly conservative stance by the CBFC.

What’s even more surprising is how the story has now caught fire overseas. American media outlets like Entertainment Weekly and The New York Post picked up on the news, reporting that the kiss was cut for being “too sensual.” This sparked a wave of confused reactions from U.S. audiences.

One user joked, “Pretty sure a country with over a billion people knows what kissing is,” while another sarcastically referenced India’s own contributions to ancient texts on love: “Didn’t they literally write the Kama Sutra?”.

While the Indian audience was not too far from calling out CBFC, one user pointed out their hypocrisy and said, “CBFC has problems with a kissing scene in Superman?? Never had a problem with the utter mess of a movie animal that glorifies cheating and had a naked man walking. Eww wtf” One comment summed it up sharply: “Please embarrass them. Maybe that’ll finally lead to change.”

Meanwhile, Superman has become one of the most highest grossing Superman movies with box office numbers going way beyond the anticipated range.
