Television stars Aly Goni and Jasmin Bhasin recently reacted to the backlash they received after referring to the word chapri in their Instagram stories, a word many internet users indicated had classist and casteist connotations. Though the actors claim it was in fun, the internet wasn’t buying it. The drama unfolded earlier this week after Aly posted a photo of Jasmin dressed in jeans and a white crop top on his Instagram Story with a tongue-in-cheek poll: Is Jasmin chapri? He included a laughing emoji in the post. Later, Jasmin got even by posting a fan sketch of Aly and captioned it, – Is Aly chapri?
Jasmin Bhasin, Aly Goni React To Chapri Remark Backlash
Although the couple meant the exchange as lighthearted banter between the two, the term chapri, very commonly used online to belittle individuals perceived as flashy or low-class, did not find favour with most followers. Followers started calling them out on being insensitive, citing that such words are usually employed as insults for people who belong to a lower class of living. With criticism mounting, Aly responded to the backlash by sharing a paparazzi post reporting on the incident. In his post, he included Jasmin and jokingly stated, It’s not funny, followed by a rolling eyes emoji. Jasmin then shared Aly’s post on her page and commented, “But it was supposed to be funny,” followed by laughing emojis.
Even after their explanation, the couple has not released an official apology. Nonetheless, their statements indicate that they didn’t foresee the reaction and used the term with less seriousness than their followers perceived.
