Understanding Alka Yagnik’s Rare Hearing Loss Condition

Sensorineural Hearing Loss or SNHL refers to permanent hearing loss resulting from damage to the inner ear or the nerve pathways from the inner ear to the brain. The cochlea and auditory nerve are essential in converting sound vibrations into electrical signals that our brain perceives as sound. If there is any destruction of these organs it would lead to SNHL, making it hard for one to hear soft sounds and reduce speech clarity, especially in noisy places.

What Are The Causes of Sensorineural Hearing Loss?

SNHL can come about due to various reasons including:

1) Viral & Bacterial Infections: Measles, mumps, meningitis etc can affect inner ear cells causing difficulties with hearing.

2) Ototoxic Medications: Some medications can also put your ears at risk, always consult with a doctor first.

3) Genetic Factors: Some people are prone to deafness due to their genes passed down from family members.

4) Ageing: Most elders suffer from age-related hearing loss or presbycusis.

5) Exposure to Loud Noises: Excessively high sound levels over a long period may impair the sensitive hair cells in the cochlea.

6) Physical Trauma: Head injury can cause loss of hearing by damaging any part of the internal ear or auditory nerve.

Types of Sensorineural Hearing Loss

SNHL can be classified by location:

1) Bilateral SNHL: This affects both ears and is usually linked to genetic causes or widespread exposure to loud sounds.

2) Unilateral SNHL: One ear is affected as a result of conditions such as acoustic neuroma & sudden loud noise. Asymmetrical SNHL: In this case, hearing loss occurs in both ears but one side experiences more severe impairment.

What Are The Symptoms and Diagnosis Of Sensorineural Hearing Loss?

SNHL manifests through such common signs as:

1) Difficulty hearing high-pitched sounds Muffled or unclear speech. Tinnitus (ringing in the ears). Dizziness or Balance problems.

2) Diagnosis will often involve an extensive hearing examination administered by a certified audiologist along with other tests like MRI scans and blood examinations to ascertain the root cause.

Treatment and Management

Although SNHL is usually permanent and not reversible there are various ways it can be managed:

1) Hearing Aids: They make sounds louder which makes them easier to hear.

2) Cochlear Implants: These are devices that are implanted inside the ears to directly stimulate the auditory nerve.

3) Avoiding Loud Noises: By staying away from noisy places, additional damage may be prevented or minimized.

Alka Yagnik while speaking on the same urged her fans to take caution with exposure to loud music and constant use of headphones.
