Aespa’s Ningning Sparks Debate After Weight Comment During Livestream
Aespa’s Ningning creates social media storm after a livestream where she spoke about her weight.
Aespa’s Ningning has found herself embroiled in a heated fan debate about body image issues after an offhand comment she made about her own weight. In K-pop, the ‘W’ word is deliberated frequently. We often find that idols who may have gained kilos due to health or other reasons are scrutinised. As a result, Ningning’s remarks caused a huge uproar on SNS (social networking sites, as used in South Korea). Read more about it below!
Aespa’s Ningning Weight Comment Sends Social Media Users Into A Frenzy!
Aespa is one of the most popular girl groups of K-pop’s fourth generation. With bops that make their way up the charts, there’s no doubt that they have carved a space for themselves in an increasingly saturated music industry.
At a recent livestream in March 2026, Ningning was reading and replying to fan questions. Someone asked for her weight, and the idol said viewers should try guessing it instead. Joking that she weighed 55 kg, Ningning laughed when her offscreen staff supposedly disagreed with this assessment. Then, she disclosed that her actual weight was 41 kg, differing by 1 kg from a staff member’s hunch of 40 kg.
Soon after, the 23-year-old idol went on to talk about how being thin didn’t matter much; instead, one should strive to be healthy. Despite the relative clarity of her statements, they were met with a huge fuss on X (formerly known as Twitter).
What X Users Had To Say About Ningning’s Remarks About Her Weight
Social media wasn’t buying Ningning’s last line, where she backtracked about her earlier quips regarding a heavier weight. One thought the Aespa member needed to apologize because she laughed at what was an average weight for many women. Another thought she should’ve been more careful talking about things like this. Especially because Ningning is an influential person teens look up to.
Am I crazy to think that that ningning girl actually did need to apologize? Saying that weight doesn’t matter then saying that it actually does and making fun of the thought of being 55kg. That’s not okay or is the k-pop community just that horrible?

Some of the users above were reacting to a clip taken from a more recent live in which she reminded viewers that she had ended all the weight talk, saying health was most important. The singer added that she wanted to live by this philosophy, too. However, not everyone agreed with her clarification.
I don’t think ningning and everyone here realizes her words and actions are contradictory!! like i believe it’s fully sensible to want her to stop diverting the fact that she laughed at an avg weight for women https://t.co/sNK5JKI2We

Aespa’s Ningning is far from the first K-pop idol to bring up weight so casually. In fact, some fans did point out that other singers have spoken about it before and received far less backlash. Despite her being a public figure, people shouldn’t hold her responsible alone. It is an all-pervasive cultural issue. Ningning herself has faced flak about her weight in the past.
