Actor Vinayakan TK Lives Under A Misogynist Rock, Doesn’t Know What #MeToo Is. We Could Tell Him, But Will He Listen?

Back in 2018, the global #MeToo movement came knocking at India’s mainstream film industry. A lot of women from in front of and behind the camera came out with allegations of sexual abuse and harassment against some of the well-known, powerful men of the film industry. And now, even though the #MeToo movement has somewhat faded out, the allegations still remain. However, there seem to be a few too-good-for-this celebs who take the movement lightly. One of them is Vinayakan TK who is an actor and musician associated with the Malayalam film industry. Quite recently, the actor made a controversial statement about the movement and said that he doesn’t know what it is. Well, I guess then maybe he should not speak about it, how about that Vinayakan?

Vinayakan TK, an actor, and musician that predominantly works in Mollywood was promoting his movie, Oruthee, when he said that he doesn’t know what the #MeToo movement means and if asking women for sex is Me Too then he will continue to do so. Really, how much more ignorant can this man be?

While speaking to the media, Vinayakan said, “What is Me Too? I do not know. Is it up to the girl? Let me ask, what if I want to have sex with a woman? In my life, I have had physical relationships with ten women. I asked those ten women if they would like to have a physical relationship with me. I will still ask if that is what you say Me Too means. No woman has come here and asked me.”

This very answer is the problem and trust me it is not just his but many men out there think the same way. #MeToo isn’t about not asking women for sex or not flirting with women or not talking to them, it is about consent and crossing boundaries. There isn’t an issue with men asking for sex, but the real question is – do you stop after she says ‘No’? In fact, the very comment that Vinayakan makes is the bases of #NotAllMen. The movement is for all the men out there who use their power and position to sexually exploit women. He, who comes from a film industry that has time and again been called for its sexism, the comment is downright ignorant and offensive.

With this kind of ignorance and attitude – I’m really not that surprised that no woman has come and asked to sleep with him. It is this casual attitude of men in power that belittles the entire movement. I mean, today you can find almost anything and everything on Google, and here is a man rather a very well-known man who has the audacity to not know what the #MeToo movement is and yet casually pass a remark over such a serious issue that affected millions of women and changed their lives for the worse. Like really, Mr. Vinayakan, pray to tell me where you get this audacity from?
