Accused Review: Konkona Sen Sharma, Pratibha Rannta’s Strong Performances Can’t Save This Shoddy Thriller!
hauterrfly Rating: 2 / 5

Having watched so many thrillers over the years, one starts to wonder what the point of the genre really is. Most of the time, they promise shocking and clever twists but end up leaving you more bored than thrilled. Recently, I watched Accused, the new Netflix film starring Konkona Sen Sharma and Pratibha Ranta. Directed by Anubhuti Kashyap, here’s a close look at what works, what doesn’t, and why it still feels worth a watch despite its flaws.

Plot

The story follows Dr Geetika Sen, a skilled gynaecologist at a London hospital, played by Konkona Sen Sharma. She lives a stable, loving life with her partner, Meera, a paediatric doctor portrayed by Pratibha Ranta. The two are happy together and even planning to adopt a child soon. However, things take a drastic turn when an anonymous email lands in the hospital’s HR inbox. It accuses Geetika of sexual misconduct, claiming the sender was her victim. Soon, more complaints appear, and the hospital launches a serious investigation. They bring in Jaideep Bhargava, a former journalist, to dig into the claims. Geetika’s world starts falling apart—her job, her reputation, and worst of all, her marriage. Both she and Meera start looking for answers on their own. Meera even hires a private investigator, and slowly, layers of truth come out. The story builds around doubt, trust, and how fast accusations can destroy lives.

Performances

Konkona Sen Sharma carries the film almost single-handedly. She portrays the character of a woman who is strong, professional, and confident on the outside but struggling under pressure inside perfectly. Her performance feels raw and controlled at the same time as she handles the anger, fear, and other emotions without going over the top. You can see every small shift in her face and body language, which makes Geetika seem like a real person.

Pratibha Rannta plays the quieter half of the couple who is calm, steady, and full of strength. In tough scenes where she confronts Geetika or deals with her own doubts, she stays natural and grounded. She never tries to steal the spotlight, but she matches Konkona Sen Sharma’s energy perfectly. With that being said, the spark between them as a couple doesn’t always catch fire. Some moments feel a little distant, like the chemistry is there but not fully lit up. Still, both deliver solid work.

Verdict: Konkona Sen Sharma And Pratibha Rannta’s Psychological Thriller Is Dull And Nothing Extraordinary!

The acting is easily the biggest reason to watch. Even when the story drags or the direction feels flat, Konkona and Pratibha pull you through. They bring sincerity and emotional weight that make the film more than just another thriller.

On the other hand, the film struggles in several places. It is set up like a gripping mystery, but it never really holds you tight. The first half sparks some curiosity about who is behind the accusations and why, but interest starts to drop as it goes on. In the second half, the focus turns more towards the strain in Geetika and Meera’s marriage.

The choice to make the lead pair a same-sex couple seems fresh, especially in a story about power and accusations. But the film doesn’t dig deep into that. The queer relationship feels like background more than something that changes the core story. If the couple were straight, the main plot would stay almost the same. Therefore, it missed the chance to explore those layers fully.

The handling of bigger themes like patriarchy and workplace power also stays on the surface level. It touches on them but never goes beyond basic ideas.

Overall, Accused has good intentions and strong leads, but it falls short as a thriller. It wants to be thoughtful and tense, yet ends up feeling lifeless at times. Konkona Sen Sharma shines brightest, and Pratibha Ranta adds solid support. But don’t expect a mind-blowing ride or something extraordinary, because It’s a mixed bag and ultimately forgettable.
