5 Indian Films And Series That Come Close To Actually Imparting Sex Education!

It is ironic how our country, which has now passed China’s population to become the most populated country in the world, considers sex a taboo topic. Since young people cannot talk to their parents or any elder about their queries regarding sex and sexual health, they resort to movies, shows and porn. This is all the more harmful because porn is the last thing one must watch to understand how sex works and not all movies and shows get their sex education content right. Watching Rakul Preet Singh’s Chhatriwali made me think of the Indian movies and shows based on sex education and how many even got them right. And it is with disappointment that I say, I could only find 5 movies and series that “came” close to normalising sex and sex education.

1. Shubh Mangal Saavdhan

Directed by R S Prasanna, this movie is the Hindi remake of his own Tamil film Kalyana Samayal Saadham. Starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar in the lead, this film talks about erectile dysfunction which is considered a hush-hush topic in India to talk about if a man cannot get it up, he is not masculine enough. The film is available for streaming on Zee 5.

2. Janhit Mein Jaari

The plot of this Nushrratt Bharuccha film is quite similar to that of Chhatriwali. The difference is, here, Nushrratt sells condoms. She, too, is looked down on in society for her job but she fights to change people’s mentalities. The film is available for streaming on Zee 5.

3. Khandaani Shafakhana

Starring Sonakshi Sinha in the lead, Khandaani Shafakhana is about a woman who runs a fertility clinic and wants to help people with their sexual problems. But the problem is that people don’t even want to say the word sex to admit they have a problem regarding it. The movie talks about having conversations around sex and it is not a taboo. The film is available for streaming on Prime Video.

4. Dr Arora

Dr Arora has set up his sex clinic in three towns to help people with sex problems. He ends up meeting different kinds of patients every day. Starring Kumud Mishra, Sandeepa Dhar and others, Dr Arora shows how the titular character wins his reluctant patients’ confidence and gets them to confide in him about their problems. The series is available for streaming on Sony Liv.

5. Lust Stories

An anthology of four short stories of women who do not find satisfaction in bed with their partners, I categorise Lust Stories as sexually educational. Primarily because it talks about normalising having sex and sexual fantasies. It also talks positively about self-pleasure without making it awkward. The series is availble for streaming on Netflix.

These five Indian projects come close to imparting sex education without beating a round the bush and sending across a clear message.
