From While We Watched To Anatomy Of A Fall, 5 Best Movies I Watched At MAMI Film Festival 2023

The MAMI Film Festival is one of the biggest international events that celebrates films from across the globe. After a long interval due to the Pandemic, the festival was back with a bang this year in Mumbai and the list of films screened at the festival was kaafi interesting. I was lucky enough to attend a few film screenings and would recommend them to be on your must-watch list. From horror to documentary and international films, this list has those few films that impressed me with their story, direction and unconventional camera angles.

While We Watched

Vinay Shukla’s documentary While We Watched on senior journalist Ravish Kumar was nothing but an eye open for all the budding professionals in this field. The raw footage of the everyday routine of a journalist trying to do his job against all the odds has to be one of the best things I watched at the MAMI Film Festival this year. I highly recommend this one.

Late Night With The Devil

There are very few horror films that make sense and have gripping storylines and conversations in it. Late Night With The Devil is one of those few horror films. The constant to and from between the characters around topics such as superstitious beliefs, exorcism, and the existence of the devil is so interesting to listen to, and it keeps you on the edge of your seat with some scary scenes too! Do watch it.

Sharmajee Ki Beti

Sharmajee Ki Beti is directed by Tahira Kashyap and stars Saiyami Kher, Divya Dutta and Sakshi Tanwar in lead roles. The film revolves around the life of some of these independent women who want to live life in their own way. The story progresses to show how each one of them fights their own battles and comes out stronger than before. It is a light-hearted film that has the potential to empower each woman who is working towards achieving her dreams. Tahira Kashyap’s experimental approach to direction and storytelling is quite captivating.

Evil Does Not Exist

Evil Does Not Exist is a Japanese film, and is recommended for people who love to expose themselves to world cinema. With slow storytelling,  unconventional camera angles and a climax that leaves you with many questions, Evil Does Not Exist is a beautifully crafted film that should be on your must-watch list.

Anatomy Of A Fall

A French courtroom drama Anatomy Of A Fall is directed by Justin Triet. It was one of the most talked about films at the MAMI Film Festival this year. Sandra Hüller gave one of her best performances. From direction to screenplay, every bit of this film was spot on! In an exclusive interview with Hauterrfly, journalist Anupama Chopra, the director of the MAMI Film Festival also suggested her favourite film and said, “I loved Anatomy of a Fall directed by Justine Triet.  I urge everyone to see it.”

Deepti DCunha On Selection Process For The MAMI Film Festival

The Artistic Director of the MAMI Film Festival, Deepti DCunha also shed light on the process of selecting film during an exclusive interview with Hauterrfly. She said, “At Jio MAMI we follow almost the same process of film selection as that of international festivals, i.e. we have a selection committee that watches the submitted screeners, reviews them and then we have multiple deliberations to decide which films will ultimately make it to our program this year taking into account everyone’s reasons for it.”
