A fresh wave of nostalgia is on its way, and it comes bearing updates from the world of 10 Things I Hate About You. Over two decades since the iconic teen rom-com first hit screens, director Gil Junger has confirmed that a proper sequel, titled 10 Things I Hate About Dating, is currently being developed. Though it hasn’t gotten the formal studio green light yet, Junger is hopeful for the project to go forward.
10 Things I Hate About You Trilogy
In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the 70-year-old director disclosed that the sequel is currently in the writing stages, with screenwriter Naya Elle James hired. “10 Things I Hate About Dating is officially in the works as a feature movie. We’re working on it right now,” he disclosed. But wait, there’s more. Junger’s goals extend past one sequel; he’s thinking of a trilogy. If all goes according to schedule, 10 Things I Hate About Dating will be followed by two additional sequels: 10 Things I Hate About Marriage and 10 Things I Hate About Kids. The concept? A rom-com trilogy that chronicles the changing and typically messy stages of contemporary relationships.
Its original 1999 release was a wily high school retelling of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, and it played an emblematic part in launching Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s careers. Cherished for its quick wit, beautiful monologues, and end-of-’90s appeal, the film has gone on to be a cult mainstay among genre fans.

Curiously, the 10 Things universe is experiencing a big resurgence at the moment. Aside from the possible film trilogy, the tale is also being adapted on stage. According to reports from Billboard and Variety, a Broadway adaptation is in the works, with Girls creator Lena Dunham and pop singer Carly Rae Jepsen set to spearhead the creative team.
While the details of casting and release dates for the movie are yet to be revealed, one thing’s certain, 10 Things isn’t merely a flash from the past; it’s set to make a significant comeback and we can’t wait.
