Zoya Akhtar Is All Set To Direct An Adaptation Of The Archies Comics For Netflix, Starring A Bunch Of Newbies. Yes Please!

Growing up, I was always into comic books. Okay, that’s a lie. I’m still into comic books. Whether it was Marvel comics, Tinkle comics, or Archies comics – there is hardly any comic book that I wouldn’t have read. I mean, these comic books have been an integral part of my childhood and even now. So, when I heard that Riverdale, the show on Netflix, was based on the characters of the Archies comics, I was beyond elated. And now, that Zoya Akhtar announced that she will be directing an adaptation of the Archies comics as well for Netflix, my curiosity to see how the project goes is off the roof. I mean, one of my favorite directors of all time directing an adaptation of one of my favorite comics, can it get better than this? I think not.

Recently, the official Instagram account of Netflix India announced the onset of a new project. A project where Zoya Akhtar will bring the Archies comics back to life in a new musical drama that is set in the 1960s. And even though the announcement did not reveal any details about the cast, it is speculated that Suhana Khan, Khushi Kapoor, and Agastya Nanda might have a role in it. In fact, even Saif Ali Khan’s son Ibrahim Ali Khan’s name was linked to the project.

Needless to say, Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti’s Tiger Baby and Graphic India will be producing this Netflix project. Netflix India took to their Instagram account to share the news and in the post they wrote, “Get your milkshakes ready ? because Archie and the gang are about to get down and desi in “The Archies”. A coming-of-age musical drama directed by @zoieakhtar. Coming soon to Netflix! #TheArchiesOnNetflix @reemakagti1, @tigerbabyfilms, @ArchieComics, @graphicindia Art by: @Parentdaniel Letters by: #JackMorelli” Not only them but even Zoya and Reema took to their respective Instagram accounts to confirm the news.

Speaking about directing an adaptation of the Archies comics, Zoya Akhtar said that she was super excited to be a part of the Netflix project. Zoya further added, “It was a large part of my childhood and teenage years. The characters are iconic and globally loved, which is also why I am a little nervous. I have to make sure the film stokes the nostalgia of a generation that grew up on the comic and yet resonates with the young adults today.”

According to the reports, Jon Goldwater who is the CEO/publisher of Archies comics stated that he believes Zoya Akhtar will do an incredible job directing the adaptation of the comics. He said, “(Zoya will) deliver a truly unique and exciting take on Archie and friends through the lens of Indian cinema’. “We know that these characters have global appeal and translating them into other settings and cultures is just the start of what we have planned for future multimedia adaptations.”

Honestly, I don’t know about you folks, but I can’t wait for this Netflix project to release. I mean, having Zoya Akhtar direct an adaptation of the Archies comics with an underlying tone of Indian culture, seems like the perfect combination to me!
