Growing up in a middle-class family, my parents subconsciously asserted several gender roles on me and my sibling, because it was ingrained in their minds as something which was “right.” Being the eldest daughter in a brown family isn’t easy. It takes a lot of rebelling and proving yourself 100 times to get what you want. In a similar Reddit thread, where Redditors discussed women whose parents promoted strict gender roles at home and what were they not allowed to do while growing up.

What Reddit Says

While this topic is pretty common, and talked about often, however, the trauma is real guys! One user commented, “I’m the eldest and only daughter and I’m expected to do everything. My mum does everything for my brother who is 18 and he doesn’t know how to do anything for himself.” One thing that was common with daughters across the comment section was that they were always taught and sometimes even forced to do the household chores while their brothers sat around waiting for everything to be done by the women of the house. Such a thing impacts your brain in a bad way for both genders. While women feel like they have all the responsibilities, men never learn to do their part which is so basic.

While another one said, “I was never allowed to have any Lego sets, play with racing cars or trains, let alone video games. My husband and friends have fixed that for me. They buy me Lego sets and video games, take me out with them on track days, and for my last big birthday, I got to drive a steam train.” Wow, we are glad that they are doing something to live their dreams! Another Redditor commented something similar saying, “My brother was allowed to wear a Hollister shirt with a bikini woman on it but I couldn’t wear a bikini because my mom said it was S-word behaviour.”

One common thing that many women related to other than the household chores and questioning choices was the lack of communication. Many women said that they couldn’t talk about issues such as periods in front of their parents because it was considered shameful. While we sometimes make jokes about such things, they stay with us, in our minds, restricting us from fully being free and comfortable with ourselves.
