Women Are Wearing Pearls To Showing Solidarity With Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris On Inauguration Day. What A Power Move

Kamala Harris created history by becoming the first woman vice president of the United States the day Biden-Harris won the 2020 US election. Her victory was an epic one since not only it was the first time a woman was going to hold the office, but she was the first American African woman of Indian and Jamaican descent and a child of migrants to become the first female leader of the country. So, it doesn’t come as a surprise that her momentous win inspired millions to women worldwide who relate to her and see her as a role model.

Today is the 59th Presidential Inauguration where Madam Vice President Kamala Harris will be taking oath of office at the US Capitol with Joe Biden to be sworn in as the 46th President of the United States. We know Harris exudes power and potential through her style statement and that’s precisely why we are expecting her to be clad in her classic tailored suit set for the ceremony today. However, there’s something else the politician is known to have an apparent liking for, and it’s her signature pearls.

Harris wore a string of pearls around her neck for all the significant events of her life which includes her graduation ceremony at Howard University, while accepting the vice-presidential nomination in August 2020 and getting vaccinated for Covid-19. Today, women are imitating her style and wearing her signature pearls to show solidarity and support to their future leader. Over 446,000 women are participating in the solidarity gesture to honour Kamala Harris on the inauguration day as she takes office. This is so cool!

A Facebook group called ‘Wear Pearls on Jan 20 2021’ has thousands of women and girls from different backgrounds and age coming together like a string of pearls (pun intended). It was 46-year-old Hope Aloaye, a retired Navy chief who lives in Orange Park, Fla who came up with the idea and started the FB group in December. The description on the group page reads, “It is about Empowered Women Empowering Women Supporting a Woman. We want as many women and young ladies to wear their pearls on the Inauguration Day of the first WOMAN VP in the history of these United States. It is open to ALL Women.” Talking about the reason for the same, Aloaye told NYT, “I woke up and thought, ‘We need to come together as women not just to celebrate Kamala Harris, but ourselves’.”

Pearls have been a prominent piece of Harris’s campaign wardrobe and became a style synonym to her while she was running for office. This wonderful little gesture by the women who are honouring Harris draws inspiration from the very special meaning behind why she sports the bejewelled necklace. Harris is an alumna of Howard University, a federally chartered historically black university (HBCU) with 86% of African-American/Black students enrolled in the college. Pearls are a symbol of Harris’s sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha and traditionally they also signify sisterhood. So, you see, how fitting it is to show support and honour to Kamala Harris by wearing pearls that represent sisterhood, solidarity and the style statement of Madam Vice President? We absolutely love this!
