Male Public Figures Say Sexist Things, Apologise, Sleep, Repeat. But Is There Any Real Changing Of Mindset Happening?

The apologies are meaningless!
Male Public Figures Say Sexist Things, Apologise, Sleep, Repeat. But Is There Any Real Changing Of Mindset Happening?

People who are public figures hold a lot of power but this power comes with terms and conditions. As a public figure, it’s essential that you use your words carefully so as to ensure that you don’t give the wrong message or say something that has a negative impact on the people who hang onto every word you say. But it’s not uncommon for us to hear powerful men speak the most absurd things on a public platform without thinking it through and more importantly, these men end up putting their misogynistic mindset on display. The most recent examples are author Chetan Bhagat, Yoga guru Baba Ramdev, Union Minister Kaushal Kishore and political leader Sambhaji Bhide. These 4 men managed to say some of the most sexist things in the recent few days and left us all shocked.

Baba Ramdev came under fire after he made a comment on how women look good in sarees or salwar suits and also when they don’t wear anything. Chetan Bhagat also faced severe backlash after he said that boys these days are distracted as they spend all their time on their phones and know who Uorfi Javed is. He further added that instead of focusing on their exams boys spend their time looking at Uorfi Javed’s pictures hiding in their blankets. On the other hand, Union Minister Kaushal Kishore spoke about the recent Shraddha Walker murder case and said that educated women are at fault for the rising crime rates as they get involved in live-in relationships. He also sought a ban on live-in relationships. Activist and political leader Sambhaji Bhide stirred up a controversy after he refused to speak to a journalist and asked her to wear a bindi on her forehead before speaking to him. He further stated that women are like “Bharat Mata” and they shouldn’t look like “widows” by not wearing bindis.

It’s not surprising that these men made these statements but what is surprising is that even after everything that we’re doing, these men haven’t learned their lesson. Now, let’s look at this from a different perspective. Chetan Bhagat and Baba Ramdev issued apologies for their statements but the thing is, in both of these cases, the men didn’t realise that the statements made by them is problematic or misogynistic. Instead, these men just explained themselves because they had no other choice. The author clarified that his statement was taken “out of context” by the media to make click-bait headlines but he only did this after he faced severe backlash for his remarks and after Uorfi Javed called him for his derogatory statement. On the other hand, Baba Ramdev clarified that he did have any intention to disrespect women while adding that his words have been taken “out of context”. Further, he apologised “if” his remark offended or hurt anyone. But this happened only after Maharashtra Commission for Women issued a notice to him seeking his response.

It’s surprising how every time a male public figure says something misogynistic it seems their words are taken “out of context”. Moreover, if you take a closer look at these “apologies” or “clarifications”, you’ll realise it’s not an apology but rather these two men seem to be trying to justify their demeaning comments against women. And let’s be honest, the only reason that they have apologised is not because they realised their mistake, but because of the backlash in media and on social media. These “apologies” aren’t a learning lesson but rather a way for them to save face after they’ve messed up. And that’s the case with most male public figures these days. Every now and then we come across a male public figure making some or the other kind of problematic statement about women and then social criticism makes them apologise but are they really sorry about it? Not really. Neither are these men learning their lesson nor are they changing their mindsets. They’re just apologising for the sake of apologising. There’s no effort to make a change and that’s why they end up repeating the same old behaviour eventually. What’s worse is that even the other male public figures don’t learn from those who land in controversies. The reason behind people calling out problematic behaviour is not to seek a pointless apology but rather to bring about a change but if mindsets don’t change, what’s the point?
