People Slut-Shaming Women For Wearing Revealing Halloween Costumes Is Scary. Can We Stop Sexualising Their Choice?

It is Halloween in two days and Twitter is brimming with posts about celebrating this holiday! It is quite fascinating to scroll through Twitter these days because someone who does not celebrate Halloween, I get to see how the west brings in this holiday that commemorates spirits! It does seem exciting, doesn’t it? The whole dressing up like popular fictional characters from movies, carving out pumpkins and going tricking and treating sounds so cool! Anyway, amid this endless scrolling on the micro-blogging platform, I came across one particular tweet that said that Halloween is less about the celebration and more about sexualising it!

When I scrolled through the comments on this tweet, well, to say the least, it was triggering AF! The way men in the comment section went on a slut-shaming spree! It is shocking to see that women who wear Halloween costumes were called ‘whores’ and ‘sluts’.

One particular Twitter user was the voice of reason who went ahead and said that it is us who have ‘sexualised’ Halloween. Spicing up your celebration is a personal choice. If you want to do it, you do it, and if you don’t then it’s fine, too!

What was all the more shocking was to see women objectify and call out other women for dressing up the way they want for Halloween! Why tear your fellow kind down? It’s not that those who are dressing up sexily are forcing others to do the same, are they? So, why can’t you be content with what you are wearing and let others be happy in their costume? One Twitter user went on to write in all caps that girls and women ‘need to be stopped’ from wearing such revealing outfits. Excuse me, ‘need to be stopped’? And who should be the one stopping them? The whole point of ‘choice’ is lost here.

What I don’t understand here is that aren’t women making a conscious choice to wear whatever they want to? So, why are people getting triggered over it? It is a holiday, yaar, let people celebrate the way they want to celebrate it. This unnecessary moral policing during festive times is super annoying.

I would like to point out here that it is the marketers and the dressmakers who are specifically making the outfits like that for women but at the end of the day, it is the woman’s choice to pick up that dress. And if she dresses up “slutily”, then what?

I don’t see women complaining about men who wish to dress up like serial killers like Jeffery Dahmer and Ted Bundy, which is far worse than dressing up like a ‘slut’, BTW! So, how about men mind their own businesses and let women celebrate the holiday as and wish they like?
