Twitter Says Daughters Are Loved Only If They Do As They’re Told. Where’s The Lie?

There are some thoughts that we as daughters choose not to speak or rather it is difficult to articulate. The fact that we are always expected to fulfil certain kinds of expectations of society, or even parents can be very burdensome. No matter, how independent or successful a daughter becomes, parents, continue to expect that they will always uphold their values of abiding by societal rules! And it kind of becomes a criterion for the daughters to be loved. Recently, this opinion was shared by a Twitter user, and it struck me so hard because where is the lie?

A Twitter user wrote that daughters only receive love if they accept and abide by all the rules set for them by the family or society, irrespective of the fact that they might not want to do it!

Another user reshared this tweet and expressed her opinion on these exact feelings felt by all the Desi daughters. The user added that a daughter’s worth is only till the time she keeps everyone’s needs before hers. She added that in a desi setup, a daughter is only worthy of being loved if she lives a life that has been given to her by society, and is not on her own terms!

These are certainly some hard-hitting statements. And one that we as daughters cannot entirely dismiss. Yes, there are many evident differences in what a family expects from their son and daughter. Daughters are always burdened with the idea of upholding a family’s reputation and values. There are still various cases of honor killings that make news. These horrific cases are extreme examples to prove that a family does not just disregard a daughter who does not choose to live according to them, but they also take away their right to breathe.

There are changes happening in this case too, however, the change is for a very handful in society. The degree might also vary depending on the place that a girl comes from, however, the harsh reality still remains that daughters need to fit the image of “Sanskaari Ladki”.
