The Fashion At The MTV VMAs 2020 Came With Lotsa Risqué (Not Just Because Of The Virus). We Are Talking Super-Sheer Outfits And Whimsical Face Shields

This year may have started like any other but two months into 2020, all hell broke loose. Well, not hell, just a demon called corona that locked us up inside our homes. As a result, everything came to a screeching halt as we were expected to maintain social distancing in order to beat the virus. The outbreak of coronavirus also pressed the pause button on all the fashion events and award ceremonies globally, cancelling or postponing them indefinitely. No Met Gala, no Billboard Music Awards! If I remember correctly, Academy Awards (Oscars) was the last event to be held where we saw celebrities putting on their best fashion foot forward and served us some gorge looks.

Well, finally yesterday the first major award ceremony of the pandemic took place and it was the MTV Video Music Awards. However, it was nothing like what we’ve seen before. There was a red carpet, yes, but the celebrities posed prior to the airing and kept a safe distance of 6 feet (can’t blame them). There was no large audience and most performances were pre-recorded to ensure maximum safety. It was fairly a virtual event but that didn’t stop the music industry biggies from showing up and bringing their A-game.

If anything, they took their fashion looks pretty serious. After all, this was one of the biggest music nights of the year and marks the first one to be held since the pandemic began. The theme of the celeb fashion seemed to be risqué with a hint a glam and they delivered some crazy fashion looks we will be swooning over till the next fashion event. Here are the looks we loved.

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus chose an outfit that could blind her haters simply with a turn. She wore a super-sheer, black off-shoulder dress by Mugler that came with tiny mirror embellishments. We love how sheer, shimmery and so sexy it is. She paired the look with a red lip for some extra drama, cause hey, it’s Miley.

Ariana Grande

Seems like Ariana’s VMA look was low-key inspired by Baby Spice. It featured a purple leather bodysuit and a matching mini skirt both by Mugler. She wore white leather shoes with square toe and 6-inch heels to pair with the leather ensemble. What’s interesting was she ditched her sky-high ponytail for baby spiced pigtails. Something tells me this could be the next big trend in beauty.

Madison Beer

Madison looked every bit the modern-day femme fatale in an itsy-bitsy sheer black bodycon dress and boy, did she turn heads (and knock some over)! This is definitely not what I have in mind while I am looking for a little black dress, but maybe it should. She paired it with strappy heels and we love that whole rings-over-gloves look.

Nicole Richie

You can never go wrong with a long train. Nicole chose to show off her gams in a tiny neon green dress with not so tiny train. The skirt came with some serious draping game and wait, is that a headband with spikey crystals that almost looks like a crown? Um, stunning!

Bebe Rexha

Rexha opted for sporty chic for the VMAs and looked like a roadie on a mission. She wore a dusty black oversized jacket with statement-making sleeves and corset strings. She paired it with cycling shorts and pulled it off quite well. I mean I could never. Don’t forget to take notes on the OTT manicure, though.

Bella Hadid

How to look dangerously sexy without putting in much efforts 101 by Bella Hadid! Bella stepped up her fashion game by donning a risky, totally see-through bodysuit featuring cut-outs, mesh and razor thin shoulder straps. She paired it with black pants, pulled her hair in a messy bun and looked effortlessly chic.

Lady Gaga

If you thought she relied on just one dress for the whole night, you were obviously wrong and don’t seem to follow Gaga’s fashion patterns. She showed up in a sliver metallic jacket by Area, looking like a space goddess and teamed it with a clear fishbowl headgear, which may or may not be her idea of face mask. Speaking of which, she debuted quirky face shields with LED lights, horns and what not. And, she nailed it. Swipe to see her looks.

While there are fashion hits, there are also fashion misses in every event and this award show was no exception. So here are some looks we thought were seriously underwhelming. For example, Joey King’s floral mini dress that she teamed with red heels and chunky gold accessories was a total turn down. She played it safe and it really didn’t excite me as a fashion fanatic. We have seen her doing better. Another was Keke Palmer’s white strappy dress with an exaggerated bow on the thigh-slit. I guess we are over that fashion element by now (yawn, boring). P.S, we missed Taylor Swift who accepted the Best Direction Award for ‘The Man’ virtually, keeping her social distance due to Covid-19.
