Sara Ali Khan, Tara Sutaria, Everyone Is Wearing Chikankari Kurtas And We Think They Are The Breeziest Summer Staple

While shopping for your summer wardrobe, the only criterion is comfort. Okay, comfort and of course style. While you can always take your pick from a range of roomy dresses and loose tees, there is one often ignored clothing option that is super chic and light as a breeze. Yes, we are talking about kurtas, but not the plain and basic ones that don’t get you excited but really pretty, embroidered ones known as chikankari kurtas. You can get these in cotton or georgette, both summer-friendly and chic. And it surely doesn’t hurt your mum’s eyes who sees you spending the entire summer in a black cotton tee (why do desi moms hate black so much, BTW?). Well, these are no tees but are just as comfy, breezy and whole lot prettier. Don’t believe just because we said it. These celeb pictures and their pretty chikankari kurtas speak for themselves.

Last year, during the lockdown, chikankari kurtas were the sartorial escape from the uninteresting PJs and yoga pants for a lot of Bollywood celebrities. They relied on these intricately embroidered kurtas for lounging in their backyards or posing in their bed on a summer afternoon. The trend continues since these timeless pieces don’t really go out of style. Recently, Tara Sutaria and Sara Ali Khan have also been spotted sporting a chikankari kurta for dinner and film promotion. You can pair them with palazzos, denims or even trendy dhoti pants and turn these kurtas into your own style statement. That’s how versatile and easy they are to style. Here is some inspiration from the stars who can’t get enough of the classic chikankari kurtas.

Seems like we’d be spending this summer in bed too, and if you are planning to shop for some lounge sets and yoga pants again, we suggest getting some chikankari kurta to keep your spirits high and look on fleek even in quarantine. Take cues from Alaya F who posted these pictures from her home wearing a pastel orange kurta and relaxed palazzo pants.

Tara Sutaria surely loves her herself a chikankari piece and her wardrobe is full of sarees and kurtas in this exquisite style. She wore this classic white chikankari kurta for a dinner and what we love about this look is how she paired the traditional outfit with satin dhoti pants that look so chic.

Sara Ali Khan wore this elegant ivory chikankari suit for the promotion of her movie and we can’t help but notice how minimal yet striking this look is. If you are looking for something totally stunning and comfy for a summer wedding, this could be your best bet. Its subtle floral embroidery and soothing colour is perfect for a glam event on a hot sunny day.

Chikankari kurta have some conventional colours that you can get easily in the market and pink is definitely one of the most sought after hues in this category. Plus, it’s one summery colour that you cannot have enough of. Mouni Roy’s pink chikankari kurta therefore gets our vote. I think rather than a pink floral dress, I am going to invest in this equally gorgeous piece this summer.

The best thing about a chikankari kurta is it is the chameleon of fashion. You can make it as traditional or trendy as you want, and as OTT or minimal as suits your style. If you have a white chikankari kurta, you can pair it with denims for a casual look, with a white palazzo for a relaxed outfit or simply turn it into a traditional Indian wear by styling it with an embellished dupatta in the colour of your choice, like Ananya here.
