Everything on the internet becomes a massive news today. And the recent outrage over Samay Raina’s India’s Got Latent comments has become the newest, most popular topic. Taking a show based on dark humour to courts and throwing counterarguments around it is all that I’ve been observing for the past two days. I do not support the statements or remarks made on the show. But, what irks me is the amount of chatter around it.
Well, India wakes up to about a hundred rape cases every day, stories of sexual assault and broken roads are every next minute on the front page, and all that the government and celebrities wanted to talk about was–Ranveer Allahbadia’s unnecessary remarks. For the unversed, the controversy broke into a full-fledged backlash when the popular podcaster appeared on the judge’s panel of comedian Samay Raina’s show–India’s Got Latent. During one of the episodes, Ranveer AKA BeerBiceps passed a lewd question about parents and s*x, sparking a wave of backlash on the internet. Responding to the same, Ranveer not only issued an apology but Samay also removed all his episodes from his YouTube channel, amid all the backlash. Between all of this, the news channels went running a sprint, popping mics and asking every popular, damn person about the controversy. Not only that, but many celebrities expressed their views and also cancelled their pre-scheduled interviews with the podcaster.
But in between all of this, no one noticed the degree of importance that something so irrelevant blindsided us from knowing some earth-shattering news. Which, according to us, required more attention. Lemme put the spotlight on them.
Where was this outrage when the Chhattisgarh court acquitted a man after his wife died due to unnatural sexual acts without consent because we have no laws against marital rape? Where was this outrage when students in a Kerala school put dumbbells on private parts in the name of ragging? Why did the political leaders not speak some sense and instead blame women for rapes or clothes or the food we consume instead of the rapist? Where were the FIRs?
Did you know Maharashtra’s 65% of newly elected males have criminal records? Where is your outrage now? 151 sitting MPs and MLAs have cases of crimes against women filed against them? But where’s the outrage there? Why is there no swift action there? In this case, the FIR was not only lodged on the panellists but also the onlookers, who bought tickets to watch the show live. I mean, all 30 guests from the audience were booked? Within hours of the internet outrage, cops visited the sets of the show, expressing anger. But did anyone for once question the criminals who left women bleeding on the bus or roads after brutally rap*ng and almost killing them? Is a stupid comment more important than a life?
So, move away from the outrage and find something better to read about today.
