Reddit Slams Old Sexist Scene From Salman Khan, Karisma Kapoor Film, Compares It To Kabir Singh

Today, audiences have become increasingly aware and woke in the kind of content they consume. They are no longer accepting casual sexism, racist jokes etc in any Indian movies. And such films are instantly called out by the viewers. But this was not the case a few years back when in the name of jokes, all we got was cringe and uncomfortable dialogues by either the hero or the supporting characters. And one such movie by David Dhawan, particularly a scene of Salman Khan and Karisma Kapoor is highly being criticised by internet users. Well, the scene is demeaning and disrespectful towards women, and I wonder how it was considered to be entertaining back then.

The scene in question is from David Dhawan’s film Dulhan Hum Le Jaenge released in the year 2000. It stars Karisma Kapoor and Salman Khan. In this particular scene, Salman Khan’s character slaps Karisma Kapoor’s character for drinking alcohol in front of other men who were actually harassing her. As the scene progresses, Salman Khan reminds her that she is an Indian woman and drinking or dancing goes against ethics. As a woman, I felt disappointed that such kind of content actually managed to do well in terms of box-office numbers.

The Reddit user who shared the clip compared Salman’s character to that of Kabir Singh who was shown to be equally toxic. In the comment section, many other users agreed to the original comment, and also discussed about that particular era in Bollywood when casual sexism and regressive ideologies were common in the name of jokes or such scenes. Users also put forth their views on the kind of roles written for women back then.
