5 Thoughts We Had About ‘Ranjish Hi Sahi’ Trailer: Mahesh Bhatt Created Series Seems An Ode To His Affair With Parveen Babi
There is some magic in the romance stories that Bollywood brings out. There is so much emotion, so much passion, and so much love. And when all of it is combined together, it makes for the perfect Bollywood love story. But the one thing that irks me about these romantic movies is that more often than not there is a very evident line that is visible between reel love stories and real love stories. I mean, we know enough Bollywood celebs who’ve had love stories filled with twists, turns, and so much drama that can make for a really good, engaging movie plot. Well, I think someone was hearing me out when I was voicing thought out loud since Voot Select came out with a series named Ranjish Hi Sahi that erases this line between reel love and real love. In fact, watching the trailer, it kind of seems as though the series is based on the heart-wrenching love affair of Mahesh Bhatt and Parveen Babi.
Recently, I watched the trailer of Voot Select’s Ranjish Hi Sahi that is created by Mahesh Bhatt and stars Tahir Raj Bhasin, Amala Paul, and Amrita Puri in lead roles. The dramatic love story set during the golden era of the 70s Bollywood is engaging with all its twists, turns, drama, and especially the music.

Just like the teaser, the Ranjish Hi Sahi trailer tells the story of a ‘desperate director’ looking to make it big in Bollywood but an encounter with a ‘dangerous diva’ turns his personal life and relationship with his ‘determined wife’ upside down. Now, neither the teaser nor the trailer blatantly states that the series is based on Mahesh Bhatt and Parveen Babi’s relationships, but the shots, the way the actors look, the situations, etc. have uncanny resemblance that’s hard to miss.
Well, now that the Ranjish Hi Sahi trailer has dropped on YouTube and I have taken the time out to watch it, I have quite a few opinions about it.
1. Is Tahir Raj Bhasin aka Shankar playing a young Mahesh Bhatt?
Tahir Raj Bhasin is pretty much on a roll this year if you ask me. We saw him in 83, and now we shall see him in another twisted love story, Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein on Netflix. In Ranjish Hi Sahi, one can’t help but associate his character with a young Mahesh Bhatt. And if it indeed is the case, you can trust Tahir Raj’s acting chops to bring this character to life.
2. Come on! Amala Paul aka Amna Parvez looks incredibly like Parveen Babi, right?
The makers might as well just announce it from the rooftops at this point. Amala Paul’s overall look makes her look uncannily like Parveen Babi back in the 70s.

3. Was it just me or did some of the shots correspond with what Mahesh Bhatt has said about his affair to the media?
On my second watch of the trailer, I recalled this interview that I had read of Mahesh Bhatt, in which he narrated his and Parveen Babi’s heartbreaking love story. The incidents that he narrated are something that you can find weaved throughout the entire Ranjish Hi Sahi trailer. I mean, these shots make it pretty obvious that the story is based on their relationship. Take for instance the last shot from the trailer where Tahir Raj Bhasin is standing in the rain saying that he found a story, this was the same incident that Mahesh Bhatt spoke about when he walked out in pouring rain when he realised that his relationship with Parveen Babi was doomed. And the fact that this series is created by Mahesh Bhatt himself, there is a good chance that we will get to see more of what went down in their relationship with an insider’s perspective.
4. The music is gripping
One thing that is constant in all films by Mahesh Bhatt is the fact that the music is at the core of it all. And you can see that same influence in the trailer as well. Having said that, the fact that Ranjish Hi Sahi is a series and not a movie, it would be really interesting to see how the Arth director weaves the music in and binds all the episodes together with it.

5. Nostalgia trip to 70s Bollywood
From the trailer, one thing is clear, that all the fans of old Bollywood movies are in for a trip. Needless to say, the dramatic love story set in 70s Bollywood, will take you down a nostalgia trip to the golden era.
I’ve always been a fan of love stories based on real lives. And Voot Select’s Ranjish Hi Sahi series is a complete package of just that. This love story filled with drama and great music is set to stream on the Voot platform from January 13, 2022; and I honestly can’t wait to watch it!
