5 Thoughts That Popped Into My Head While Watching R. Madhavan And Surveen Chawla’s ‘Decoupled’ Trailer

Marriage is such a fickle thing, don’t you think? It is based on a foundation of trust, love and respect (among other things). However, it can be difficult to maintain all these elements and many times it is difficult for both partners to remain on the same page throughout the years. This can result in anger, resentment and them drifting apart. This has been very well shown in Decoupled, a romantic comedy series by Hardik Mehta featuring actors R. Madhavan and Surveen Chawla as the leading couple which is set to release on December 17. Netflix India shared the trailer just yesterday and it has already garnered 12,02,129 views and a lot of comments that indicate that the people are looking forward to the series.

Decoupled follows a couple, Arya (played by R. Madhavan) and Shruti (played by Surveen Chawla), and their journey as they navigate through their divorce and their feelings towards each other and their marriage in general. A fresh take on couple stories is a welcomed rarity in Indian shows. Having watched the trailer multiple times, sheerly out of anticipation and my overwhelming need to dissect and analyse everything, here are my 5 thoughts on the trailer of Decoupled:

1. The chemistry between  R. Madhavan and Surveen Chawla in Decoupled is really good. They have an on-off, hot-cold kinda dynamic that works perfectly in the context of their characters’ situation. Playing a couple that is getting a divorce, their constant bantering paired with their familiarity with each other is very fun to witness.

2. In Decoupled, Shruti is not shown to be some damsel in distress whose husband is leaving her, as is usually depicted in Indian media. The trailer of Decoupled shows her meeting other men and actively looking out for her own happiness, which I love to see! Moreover, there are scenes that subtly highlight Arya’s own insecurities regarding himself and the divorce. I love the slight bending of traditional gender dynamics, showing the woman being confident while the man is a bit insecure. Yes! More of this, please!

3. Absolutely love that the story of Decoupled starts in the middle of them discussing a divorce. It shows a perspective of marriage that is not easily seen in stories like these. What happens to the ‘happily ever after’? Marriage does not guarantee that happiness and I like that take on the subject.

4. I like the way the main subject of divorce is represented in Decoupled. There is no unnecessary drama, crying and sobbing. From what can be seen in the trailer, the divorce looks pretty amicable and a mutual decision despite the constant bantering between Arya and Shruti which is entertaining to witness.

5. Lastly, I love the writing of the series for two reasons: Firstly, the language is simple and appeals to the youth without it coming off as cheesy and cringy. The writer and creator, Manu Joseph has done justice while writing the dialogues; making them entertaining yet mundane enough to be realistic in nature. Secondly, I am in love with the cynical nature of the comedy in Decoupled. The entire trailer talks about and takes jabs at the institution of marriage and presents the viewers with reality checks while making them laugh. That kinda humour paired with R. Madhavan’s comic timing makes the whole trailer the perfect package as the introduction to Decoupled.

In the sea of rom-coms Netflix will be bombarding us with this holiday season, I am looking forward to December 17. I cannot wait to sit on my bed, covered with blankets and enjoy the cold December winter with Decoupled.
