Not A Fan Of Shoulder Pads, But This Padded Shoulder Tees Have My Vote

Not A Fan Of Shoulder Pads, But This Padded Shoulder Tees Have My Vote

If someone had told me in the beginning of January that I’d be spending the whole year in my tees and PJs, I would have laughed it off and probably would have given them a stern look of WTF. Cut to eight months later, here I am, writing this piece in, you guessed it, my tee and PJs. The coronavirus outbreak may have disrupted the ebbs and flows of fashion trends, since no fashion shows or seasonal collection drops, the Instgram OOTD posts compensate for the lack of haute-off-the-runway trends even in the quarantine. The latest one to flood our feeds is the padded muscle tee.

Since a humble tee is all the only practical and functional piece of clothing to rock in the quarantine, why not make it uber stylish and chic? This edition of muscle tee features padded shoulders (not the exaggerated ones from couple years ago, thank goodness). They are structured but in a very wearable way. I know, unlike the previous whirl this trend had, the shoulder pads didn’t disappoint here. They are giving the basic tee a stylish edge, in fact. The cut is pretty casual and colour palette consists of mostly neutrals like white, beige and black. So, basically, it is equal parts relaxed and immaculate which means you could style it any way you want.

It’s not the first T-shirt trend to be having a moment in the fashion space. Even if you don’t realise, there have been umpteen T-shirt styles in the past that dominated the like crop tees, textured tees and most recently, chic graphic tees. This one though is more of a 90s muscle tee reappearing with the most controversial fashion element, shoulder pads, which actually makes it more avant-garde than a home fashion item.

Thanks to its basic design and structure silhouette, padded tees is so versatile that it’s really up to you how you want to style it. You can’t go wrong with denims so pair it with shorts or boyfriend jeans for a cute, casual look. For zoom meetings, try teaming your padded tee with tailored pants or relaxed trousers (although you don’t really need to switch you PJs for online office meetings duh!). It looks equally chic with joggers, skirts and oh, leather pants. So, you get the point; it can actually be paired with any basic fashion staple. Simply accessorise the look with chunky gold chains (or dainty ones, your call) and you are good to go. If you still need some visual inspo, here are some looks for you straight from the Instagram.

You can find these on fashion brands like Mango, Zara, Massimo Dutti and H&M. If you could find it in you to sport the shoulder pad jackets and pantsuit, you can test the waters with this minimalistic fashion trend. Celebrities like Rita Ora and a bunch of fashion bloggers have already hopped on board and if the social media pattern is any indication, you will see these gorgeous tees everywhere, at least on your screens. Also, making fashion statement with a pretty cool T-shirt? Now who doesn’t want that?

Of all the 2020’s quarantine trends, I must say this one is my absolute fav. It doesn’t scream pandemic unlike the tie-and-dye sweats or fancy face masks and therefore we can expect it to stick around post quarantine as well. Plus, this style is totally different to what we’ve seen in the tee department till now and makes even a boring white tee fun (with all the drama going on in the shoulder area). TBH, I wasn’t a fan of shoulder pads but this trend might have changed that.

Although, I do miss the array of vibrant colours that could be incorporated in the trend since I am not big on boring basic T-shirt shades. I am yet to come across a padded tee in a colour other than grey, white, lilac and olive. But I guess since the trend is still picking pace, we might see different variations of the stunning tee soon. BRB, getting myself one STAT.
