Mrunal Thakur Talks About Her Transition From Television To Films, Reveals Why ‘Jersey’ Didn’t Have An OTT Release

It’s not easy for a television actor to transition to the filmy duniya. As easy as it may seem, it really isn’t for an actor to switch from the small screen to the big screen while carving a space for themselves in the entertainment industry. But there’s one actor who seems to be doing this rather smoothly. Yes, I’m talking about Mrunal Thakur. As the actress gears up for the release of her upcoming film Jersey alongside Shahid Kapoor, she opened up about her smooth transition from television to films as well as playing lead roles. The actress also spoke about her upcoming film releasing in the theatres instead of on an OTT platform.

In a conversation with the Bombay Times, Mrunal Thakur opened up about moving out of her hometown Dhule in Maharashtra and starting a career in showbiz. Speaking about it, the actress revealed that Smita Patil has always been her inspiration mainly because when she would visit her father’s native place, Shirpur, he would show her the house that belonged to Smita Patil. Mrunal further added that Smita Patil was her role model ad she was way ahead of her time and it takes ‘lots of guts to do the kind of films she did’.

Talking about her transition from TV to films, Mrunal Thakur shared that she feels glad that she could inspire television actors and feels happy when they reach out to her and look up to her. The actress shared that she broke the image from her first film itself. Pointing out that nobody expects television actors to start their film career with an artistic film, Mrunal said that most actors do a typical Bollywood masala film to kickstart their transition. Crediting Love Sonia for her success as an actor, she said that it was this film that made people take her seriously and helped her land stronger roles.

The actress said that she hopes to break stereotypes and set an example with her work and is looking forward to taking up more versatile roles. She also dropped a hint that something interesting is already in the pipeline. ” I just want to say that earlier I was surviving, but now, I am living my life as an actor. And I have earned it all on my own, and nobody can stop me from living my dream. I want to be a part of stories that resonate with people, and I am glad that filmmakers are showing faith and trust in me. I am getting to meet my dream directors. I am in a very good phase of my career right now,” Mrunal Thakur told Bombay Times.

Discussing her plans to play the quintessential lead heroine in a film, Mrunal Thakur stated that the term ‘lead’ in itself is misleading as being the lead doesn’t matter as long as one gains popularity with the crowd with their role. She further added that the impact an actor leaves on the audience is what matters in the end. “Lead koi bhi ho, lekin kabhi kabhi asli masala dussre characters mein hota hai,” she said.

Speaking about her upcoming film alongside Shahid Kapoor Jersey, Mrunal Thakur revealed why the makers decided to wait and release the film in the theatres instead of on an OTT platform. The actress shared that the film is full-on mixed emotions and the characters are so relatable that the film deserves a space in the theatres so that people can watch it uninterrupted. She went on to add that the scenes have been shot for a big-screen experience and are not computer graphics which is why it may not be fun to watch it on an OTT platform. “Overall, this film is an experience,” she said. Discussing the delay in the film release, Mrunal said that she is overwhelmed as she has waited for a long time for Jersey to hit the big screen and the entire team has worked hard on the film. She also shared that she will be playing the role of a mother in the film and since she has not experienced the same in real life, she took inspiration from her mother to play the role.
