Move Over Pretty Privilege, Women Are Now Enjoying Ugly Privilege, Here’s Why It’s A Blessing In Disguise
Women on the internet are celebrating ugly privilege but what is it?

Another weekday, another surfing on the internet till 2 AM, reading random articles (Yes, nerd). But this was exactly when my sleepy ass stumbled upon a new “blessing in disguise” that had the whole of the TikTok community distorted. Well, in your life you might have heard the term ‘pretty privilege’ but a 38-year-old Sarah on the internet has intensified the term ‘Ugly privilege’ and she has an explanation for it. The Ontario native has previously talked about having ugly privilege, but really explained what it means in the viral TikTok and a lot of women on the internet feel that she has termed into words what they’ve been feeling.
So, What Is Ugly Privilege?
“Being ugly is a blessing in disguise.” A group of young ladies are turning to TikTok to explain why they are content with what they call “ugly privilege.” The underlying thread connecting these people is their idea that not adhering to social beauty standards for women saves them from being objectified by males. Sarah also mentioned that it doesn’t boil down to physically thinking about yourself. She said, “Men, in general, don’t find me attractive, and to me, that’s a privilege.” She feels it’s a privilege that men don’t find you attractive and leave you alone, sparing you of all the drama, or the inappropriate texts.
But when she voiced, what ugly privilege truly means, her video got over 3500 comments, many among them from women who related to it. A user wrote, ” This is why I travel a lot solo. I get left alone, I know I’m not found attractive by men. I’ve learned to just get over my ego because I’m given my peace.” Another woman wrote how her sister is gorgeous and that she can’t do many things for fear of harassment, which on the other hand, she feels she has the liberty to do. Another one wrote, “I gained weight after having my son and men ignore me now, I have been so unmotivated to lose weight because it’s been so nice. I used to get harassed constantly, couldn’t escape it.”
In a conversation with Buzzfeed, Sarah said that there are men out there who don’t understand the concept of boundaries or consent and that they don’t want to grow to their level. They in turn want women to degrade to theirs and that it’s a privilege not having to deal with those men. Furthermore, Sarah emphasizes in a different video that ugly privilege should not be viewed as providing immunity from men, sexual harassment, and violence. She acknowledges that there are men out there who would do anything to anyone.
According to a multidisciplinary study published in the US National Library of Medicine, physically attractive people are more likely to be interviewed and hired, advance faster in their careers through frequent promotions, and earn higher wages than people who are considered unattractive. Overall, while women who identify as having “ugly privilege” appear to benefit from being left alone by men, it is vital to believe and trust women and their tales.
