Okay, women’s safety is not taken seriously throughout the world, we have established that. But due to the rising awareness about crimes against women, there is still some level of security when it comes to female customers in most establishments. But, the same consideration doesn’t seem to be extended to men. While women are more likely to be unsafe than men, it doesn’t mean all men are safe at all times. Obviously, men have also been victims of abuse and assault and the fact that these victims aren’t taken seriously because of their gender is appalling. Another example is this Reddit post which shows the doors of the men’s and women’s locker rooms. While the women’s locker room was secured with a proper lock, the men’s locker room wasn’t.
In a post which is titled, “The women’s locker room at my gym has a highly secure personalized locking system whereas the men’s locker room can be entered by anyone” by u/Levszan 2 doors can be seen adjacent to one another. One is of the women’s locker room and the other is of the men’s. Firstly, aren’t men entitled to the same safety and privacy as women? Why isn’t there security for both locker rooms? Secondly, it has to be noted that even if there is security at the women’s locker room door, not having the same measures for the men genuinely doesn’t change the safety issue. Someone can just as easily sneak into the men’s room and harm the female members or employees of the gym. So this whole thing is completely counterproductive. The people of reddit responded to this with their own stories and incidences of when they felt unsafe and it made me question the kind of world we live in.

While I am certain that the women’s locker room door was secured because of some safety issue, it is just pointless to me to not maintain the same protocol for men’s door too. If the lock on the women’s door is because of an incident, are they waiting for there to be an incident with the men too? Like, why not just prevent it?
