Meghan Markle’s Dress On Oprah, Princess Diana’s Revenge Dress. These Women Are Using Fashion To Make Bold Statements

On Sunday, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry appeared for the much-anticipated and a tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey, where they made revelations about racism in the royal palace, their decision to step down as the senior members of the family and also ended the two-hour segment by announcing that they are expecting a baby girl. The interview was a roller coaster of emotions which made us gasp, shake our heads, empathise with Meghan. She was poised, calm and had a subtle smile throughout and was dressed elegantly too. She opted for a Giorgio Armani number, a black silk dress featuring floral print, belted waist and a plunging neckline that was perfectly decent. Okay but why am I suddenly talking about her outfit in detail? It is because the dress had a hidden meaning, which you might have missed while you were reaching out for tissues.

The dress worth around £3,375 (INR 3,41,4623) had white lotus flowers printed on one side which, according to the Binghamton University, “symbolizes purity, enlightenment, self-regeneration, and rebirth.” And, it’s no fluke or coincidence. Markle intentionally chose the dress and was aware of symbolism of the print. Her spokesperson said, “The Duchess understands that a lotus seed can withstand thousands of years without water, able to germinate over two centuries later,” and thus she opted for an outfit that represents hope.

We love when women make a statement with their fashion and Markle has done it multiple times in the past. Also, she isn’t the only one from the royal family who channeled her emotions through her outfit. Princess Diana once wore a little black dress which was not only against the royal protocol of not flaunting bare shoulders but also symbolised the death of her marriage with Prince Charles.

The dress remains one of the most iconic fashion moments in history which came to be known as ‘revenge dress’. The day after Prince Charles admitted to cheating on her, Princess Diana  stepped out in a sexy and skimpy black dress featuring an off-shoulder neckline, body-hugging silhouette and above knee in length, which was considered a no-no for a royal princess at that time. Also, she chose black which is meant to be worn by a royal member only for funerals. However, she wore it for a gala at the Serpentine Gallery in London exuding power and showing her protest.  She chose fashion to rebel, while her daughter-in-law Meghan wore another black dress to demonstrate hope.

Both women have been compared by media and fans on several occasions and many times, it’s been seen that The Duchess of Sussex echoes her late MIL persona in a lot of ways, and not just with her sartorial picks . It was also noticed that Meghan’s look for the Oprah Winfrey interview was strikingly similar to Diana’s look for her controversial BBC interview in 1995 where she talked about her marriage with Prince Charles which led to divorce. Both wore defined eyes, nude lips and an outfit in the same colour scheme–black and white.

Meghan also wore a diamond tennis bracelet for her interview which was previously owned by Diana and has been seen on her wrist several times. There’s no doubt that both the ladies have made a strong statement with their sartorial choices and stunned everyone with their confidence, power and an enigmatic smile.
