Kerala Students’ Unique ‘Sit-On-Lap’ Protest Against Society’s Moral Policing Is Winning Praises, Even From City Mayor

If anything goes wrong in this world, people start to protest against it because they want to voice their opinions which is a good thing. However, have you ever seen people protesting by sitting on each other’s lap? Yes, my dear gentle readers, you heard it right. Kerala students are protesting against the moral policing of people by sitting on each other’s laps on the bus stand as they have a problem with boys and girls sitting together. Hmm, what a unique idea, to be honest!

Recently, the students of the College of Engineering Trivandrum shocked everyone by posting pictures online wherein boys and girls can be seen sitting on each other’s laps at a bus stop. The bench of the bus stop was reportedly cut into three small seats to prevent girls and boys from sitting together. And you will be surprised to know that the ‘sit-on-lap’ protest got appreciation from the Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram. The Mayor of the city – Arya S Rajendran, supported the step taken by the students, she even visited the area on July 21.

According to the reports, the students claimed that the locals used to police them every time they saw girls and boys sitting together. On being questioned, the authorities said that the bench at the bus stand has been altered due to COVID-19 restrictions and for practising social distancing. They also mentioned that the bus stand was in a bad condition but agreed on the fact that they didn’t like students sitting at the bus stand together.

Later, the Mayor posted this incident on her social media account and deemed the act as ‘unbecoming of a progressive society’. She said that the student’s reaction is ‘responsive’ and announced that they are planning on building a gender-neutral bus stand with modern facilities pretty soon.
