Kangana Ranaut Designed The Outfit She Wore To Receive Her First National Film Award For ‘Fashion’ And It’s So Good. We Are Impressed!

Celebrities appear for various events and press junkets in a day and step out in different outfit every time. We know that because each time that happens, we are envious of their fancy wardrobe overflowing with designer clothes and coveted fashion labels. We promptly assume that since they are pretty loaded and have a bus of people to source them these designer outfits, they don’t really have to move a finger and simply slip into the dress picked by their stylist and show up at the event. This isn’t really true for every celebrity and Kangana Ranaut opened up about one such incident on Twitter recently.

Whoever has watched Madhur Bhandarkar’s Fashion, the film about three women powerhouses in the twisted world of fashion, would be able to vividly recall Kangana’s Shonali Gujral, a character that probably stayed with us longer than Priyanka Chopra’s Meghna Mathur. There are very slim chances that Kangana’s portrayal of the supermodel reigning the runway didn’t give you goosebumps. For this role, she won the National Award for best supporting actress, which was also her first of the many. Kangana retweeted a picture from the day where she receives the honour from the then President Pratibha Patil at the 56th National Film Awards. In the tweet she revealed that the black suit set that she wore for the occasion was actually completely designed by her. We are impressed.

She said the reason why she had to design her own outfit for such a big event and precious moment in her life was because she didn’t have enough money to buy herself something special. She wrote, “First National award, Many special memories attached to this, I was one of the youngest actresses to receive the honour, also for a woman centric film from a woman President. I designed my own suit didn’t have enough money to buy something special, the suit wasn’t bad…nahin? Well, I think no designer outfit could be as special as wearing her own humble fashion creation.

It was an all-black suit featuring red and green embroidered panels on neckline and waistband and sheer, long sleeves. The dupatta had a broad golden border which complemented the whole design and made it an apt choice for the ceremony. The style was in vogue back in 2010 when she received the award and she did a pretty good job at combining gorgeous colours, design aesthetics and minimal embroidery to the outfit which was parallel to the trendy Indian attire of the time.

A lot of Bollywood celebs have opened up about how the money crunch forced them to get their important outfits made from scratch from local tailors which we must have mistaken for a designer number when we saw it onscreen. The former Miss Universe and actor Sushmita Sen once revealed that her Miss India gown was in fact made from a fabric purchased from Sarojini Market in Delhi and stitched by a tailor sitting nearby. If these celebrity revelations about their sartorial workarounds tell us anything, its that some of them are just like us who’ll do any jugaad when it comes to clothes, cuz fashun!
