Let's bash stereotypes!
Jaya Bachchan, Shweta Bachchan And Navya Naveli Nanda Discuss How Women Don’t Need Western Power Suits To Feel Powerful

Podcasts have become one of the most common things that people listen to on a daily basis now. They love to listen to people sharing their experiences, some stories or even discussing some matters of the essence. I have this habit where I love to listen to podcasts with debates and discussions while I work out. I think it’s a brilliant way to distract your mind and focus your body. This is probably why Navya Naveli Nanda’s podcast, What The Hell Navya caught my attention. It’s a brilliant idea to bring together three generations of the family to discuss matters and topics of the essence and hear their diverse views on the same. You can really tell how far society has come as a whole when you hear such conversations, you know?

In the latest episode of the podcast titled ‘One Crown, Many Shoes’, Jaya Bachchan, Shweta Bachchan Nanda and Navya Naveli Nanda discussed the fact that even though we have moved to being a more developed society, women still have to deal with a lot of stereotypes on a daily basis. During this discussion, Shweta Nanda exclaimed that one of the biggest examples lies in Bollywood movies as there’s always a heroine who wears salwar suits and always stays at home. She is considered to be a good person.

Meanwhile, the antagonist, i.e. “the vamp,” is always shown wearing western clothes and is shown to always be out and partying. It’s really sad how her example literally proves the fact that we as a society attach stereotypes and judgements to a woman’s choice of clothes. Thinking back, that really makes sense because ethnic clothes are always associated with nice characters and the ‘Sati Savitri’ but western clothes aren’t. It’s genuinely unfortunate.

Following this, Jaya Bachchan started another discussion about clothes, stating the fact that more and more women are choosing to wear western clothes these days. She believes that it’s because of this weird belief that wearing pants has now been accepted as women taking charge. You know how “Who wears the pants in this relationship?” is an actual saying? Pants as a piece of clothing have been associated with ‘manly’ men.

Now, I genuinely think she might have a point. But as Shweta Bachchan Nanda explained, there was a good reason for women to wear pants because, during the industrial revolution and war, women had to wear pants and go out to work. So, they began being associated with comfort for work and taking up responsibilities.

But, I believe that the meaning of clothes has changed with time. It’s as Jaya Bachchan explained, she doesn’t mean that women should just choose to wear sarees and ethnic clothes. Instead, she wishes that women begin choosing to wear whatever represents them to feel comfortable and the best version of themselves. She exclaimed how she would love to see women in their own ‘women power’.

Navya Nanda agreed to this by mentioning a fabulous example. She talked about how Nykaa’s founder and CEO, Falguni Nayar chooses to wear sarees no matter where she goes, It’s not because she’s dressing up for the masses, it’s because she’s self-made and she’s comfortable in her skin, no matter what she wears. That’s the true representation of female power. They definitely have a point, don’t they?

We live in an era where women no longer need to dress in western power suits to feel strong and powerful just like they don’t need to wear suits and ethics to showcase their main character a.k.a heroine energy, women should just wear what makes them feel amazing and comfortable. After all, it is this comfort and the power of choice that goes with it which is our special power. Isn’t it?

It really is time to shatter the stupid boxes made by societal stereotypes. Women truly deserve to be whomsoever and whatsoever they choose and want to be. Sounds like a good plan, doesn’t it?
