Why Are Indians Obsessed With Celebrity Weddings? Is It Need For Gossip Or Just Vicarious Living?

When most of my friends hear about my job or read my writings, one of two things happen, either they think that what I do is the easiest thing ever or they ask me, “what is the point of writing such minute details regarding celebrities?” And my answer is always the same: I shrug and say, “people like reading about them.” But I feel like after talking about celebrities on the daily and covering so many celeb weddings, I have kinda come to understand why we Indians love our celebrities and are so obsessed with all the celebrity weddings such as Vicky – Katrina and Ranbir – Alia. So let me try and explain the same to all the judgemental people aka my friends, who have questioned what I do for a living (looking at you, Prerna).

First things first, I will answer this very cliche question, “aren’t celebrities just normal people too?” Okay, yes, they are people and that’s where the similarities end. Let’s be fair here, there is nothing “normal” about celebrities owing to the humongous gap in our incomes and lifestyles. There is clearly a wall between us normies and these celebrities which ensures we live in different worlds. Now, this point brings me to my reasoning: people don’t obsess over celebrity weddings for the relatability factor (because there is none) it is more for the FOMO and they want to live vicariously through them. I don’t know about you guys but neither I nor my parents have the crores celebrities do to spend on a single event aka a wedding. Moreover, even if I did have the money, I am not one for big weddings but then again, that is a personal preference.

I feel like from where we stand, celebrities’ worlds are sorta like an unattainable dream. Obsessing about these weddings is like the adult version of daydreaming about fairytales. There is no Prince Charming coming to save you just like you probably won’t ever be able to afford a Sabyasachi or Manish Malhotra lehenga. Most of us end up going for whatever fits into our aukaad and resort to watching and reading the news of these celeb weddings to fulfil whatever little hopes and dreams our very middle-class incomes couldn’t afford. And honestly? Why is that a wrong thing? If someone finds some sort of happiness by vicariously living through Katrina Kaif or Alia Bhatt’s fancy lehengas and regal wedding venue and decor, why not allow them that?

While these 2 aren’t really comparable, I will admit that trying to lose yourself in the beautiful floral decor, royal venues and heavy, zari trousseau is not too different from transporting oneself to another unattainable universe using books, movies etc. So why are people who indulge in the former judged more than the latter?
