Hautetalk: Why Do Conman Sukesh’s Letters To Jacqueline Fernandez Make Headlines As Important Questions Remain Unasked?

As a journalist, I’ve been seeing Conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar make headlines a lot more than Jacqueline Fernandez does but hold on, he’s been making headlines at her expense. From promising iPhones to her fans to claiming he’s buying her luxury gifts, it’s an ever-growing list of promises and declarations of love. But that’s not the worst thing, the worst thing is that as a society, we simply sit back and witness this man making claims without asking questions or rather – the right questions.

How Are Conman Sukesh’s Letter To Jacqueline Fernandez Always Making Headlines?

Taking a deep dive into his letters to Jacqueline Fernandez, I realised that his promises seem to be conveniently timed to bank on the actor’s fame when her projects are released or when there’s a special celebration be it her birthday or Valentine’s Day. And as a society and as publications, we’re all guilty of banking on trends and we cover these stories without questioning the credibility of everything being said by this man because we have been conditioned to simply believe men instead of questioning them.

When was the last time anyone questioned which fans of Jacqueline Fernandez received the promised iPhones? Or where is the private jet or yacht that she was allegedly gifted by this conman? I’m yet to see all the promises made by him in letters come to life. A simple Google search helped me realise that the actor has been in the headlines constantly due to a letter written by a Conman, which is beginning to seem like another con to be in the news. Another question that arises is – how do his letters to the actor reach the media? How does his letter seem to make the headlines every single time? Easy, they’re sent to the media by the conman via his Advocate. Don’t believe me? Take a look.

On the other hand, Jacqueline Fernandez has maintained a dignified silence by not responding or reacting to any of the letters and by not refuting or accepting any of the claims made by the conman accused in a multi-crore fraud case. As a woman, I’m sure it’s not easy to sit back and witness a conman having his 5 minutes of fame and being heard more than you are in spite of the success you have worked so hard for.

This makes me question what we have become as a society. We silently stand on the sidelines and watch a conman accused of fraud write letters to an actor, which border harassment. When was the last time any of us asked if the actor has ever even replied to his letters? Or why he continues writing letters even though he doesn’t get any response? As media, we have an ethical obligation to report the news but as people of the society, we have a moral obligation to ask the right questions to this man who continues to publically reach out to a woman who has remained mum. Let’s think of it like this, if a former friend of yours accused of a white-collar crime continued writing letters to you, would you not feel frustrated? Would your family not be angry about it? Would your friends not take a stand and question the man? But in this case, we’re all guilty of staying silent.
