Explained: The Problem With Grok AI Trend Generating S*xualised Images Of Women

Everyday we hear of a new problematic trend, doing the rounds on the internet with our belief in authenticity depleting. And the newest one in line, also involves internet’s favourite fantasy–AI. Recently, the unsettling trend on X (formerly known as Twitter) had Grok AI stripping and generating s*xualised images of celebrities and ordinary women. Men have edited famous women’s faces on n*de bodies since the dawn of editing software, but easy involvement of artificial intelligence for this purpose is especially concerning. Learn more about this, the timeline of events, and steps being taken to curb it.

How Did The Bikini Grok AI Trend Start?

On January 2, 2026, Elon Musk re-posted a picture of a toaster wearing a bikini (OP: @AdamLowisz) to ascertain how Grok AI could dress up even household appliances. Soon, X users started asking the AI chatbot to dress women in two-piece swimsuits, or other skimpy outfits.

Using women’s images and likeness without consent, the shocking photographs flooded X and other sites. People reacted with widespread unease and panic. Many denounced the trend, but some policed women, saying that they should avoid posting pictures of themselves on social media to prevent such instances. Excuse me, what?

How Countries Reacted And What X Did To Prevent This

The practice of creating s*xually promiscuous images using AI speaks of the lack of safety for women (and children). Unlike Grok, others like Chatgpt or Meta AI add a basic safety protocol to prevent spreading such images.

After the outrage, many countries took notice. Malaysia and Indonesia banned the use of Grok provisionally, while UK-based Oxfam launched an official investigation, with potential for blocking. India issued a notice to the company, while Canada called for a change to their existing law so they can charge people for non-consensual usage of photos.

Then, reacting to their reputation hit, X added new guidelines to prevent generation of such s*xual images of women (and children). However, they seem to work too well as people were able to override the blocks. The feature of image generation has been limited to the paid Grok AI service since, wherein the company notes the names and payment details of users.

Free speech cannot come at the expense of someone’s dignity. As a human-created AI chatbot, we need to rely on human interventions to ensure it functions as intended. In an ideal world, a chatbot wouldn’t need to be regulated because people wouldn’t ask it to do unspeakable things. Till we get there, we need proper checks on generative AI.
