Zoya Akhtar Reveals Camera Technicians Wouldn’t Take Orders From Her During Her Directorial Debut ‘Luck By Chance’

No matter how modern we become as a society, women in leadership roles aren’t something that is accepted easily. Moreover, a large number of men don’t like taking orders from a woman and having to see a woman as a boss is tough for most people. And if you don’t believe me, I’m sure you’ll believe India’s well-known filmmaker, Zoya Akhtar, the director who has given us a wide variety of content in the form of films like Dil Dhakadne Do, Gully Boy, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Luck By Chance and more. Speaking to a news portal, the filmmaker revealed that when she first made her debut as a director with Luck By Chance, the technicians would not take orders from her and would instead chose to take order from the lead actor, Farhan Akhtar.

In a conversation with The Hindu, Zoya Akhtar shared that back when she made her directorial debut with Luck By Chance, she was a newbie and Farhan Akhtar was an established filmmaker apart from being the lead in the film. The filmmaker shared that during the shoot, come technicians would ask him if the shot was okay and he would ask them to ask her as she was the director. Zoya further revealed that she had to eventually take the Steadicam operator to the side and tell him that they won’t be able to work together if he won’t speak to her. She further added that the cameraman responded by saying that she’s like his sister to which she replied by stating that she’s not his sister but his boss. “We subsequently became friends, because it was a chat without any angst involved,” Zoya told the news portal.

While Zoya Akhtar has given us several hits, her first film Luck By Chance was not one of them. The film received appreciation from the critics but it bombed at the box office but the director followed it up with a rather successful hit film, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. FYI, currently, Zoya Akhtar is working on her upcoming film The Archies which is the debut film of three star kids namely, Suhana Khan, Khushi Kapoor and Agastya Nanda. She is also gearing up for the release of the second season of her much-awaited web series Made In Heaven. Well, I guess we all women have to prove ourselves no matter where we go and what we do. Here’s to hoping that there comes a time when a woman in a leadership role is nothing uncommon.
