From ‘True Beauty’ To ‘School 2017′, 5 K-Dramas That Showcased Students’ Issues Realistically

Whenever I think about my school day, the first thing that comes to my mind is how I used to pull multiple all-nighters to prepare for exams. The fear of performing well in the examination was so real (I would like to blame it on the education system that expects students to memorise the whole textbook). But some people still think that students exaggerate when they talk about their issues which is so infuriating. However, when I started watching K-dramas, I realised that some of them showcased student life and their hardships in the most realistic way possible and it was such a relief to know that some people do understand the young generation. So, on World Students’ Day, here are 6 realistic Korean dramas that portray student life realistically.

1. True Beauty (Prime Video)

True Beauty featuring Moon Ga Young, Park Yoona, Cha Eun Woo from ASTRO, and Hwang In Youp revolves around a high school student named Im Joo Gyeong. After getting bullied by her classmates for her appearance, Joo Gyeong gets transferred to another school and decides to transform herself with the help of makeup.

True Beauty highlights how unrealistic the beauty standards are and how it negatively affects the confidence of young female students.

2. School 2017 (Rakuten Viki)

School 2017 starring Kim Sejeong, Kim Jung Hyun, Jang Dong Yoon, Seol In-ah, Han Joo Wan, and Han Sunhwa is a part of the popular ‘School’ series. The story of this K-drama follows Ra Eun Ho, a cheerful but not particularly academically gifted student who comes from a middle-class family. She faces discrimination in her school after getting bullied by her own classmates.

School 2017 shows actual difficulties that students face and highlights the fact that sometimes, the school environment becomes too toxic for them to handle.

3. 18 Again (Netflix)

18 Again is a remake 2009 film 17 Again starring Zac Efron. It tells the story of Jung Da Jung (played by Kim Ha Neul) and Hong Dae Young (played by Yoon Sang Hyun and Lee Do Hyun), a married couple who is on the brink of getting separated. But one day, Dae Young transforms into a teenager and decides to rectify his mistakes.

18 Again quite realistically depicts the struggles that come with teenage pregnancy and I think all students, teachers, and parents should watch this series because it is very insightful.

4. Extraordinary Attorney Woo (Netflix)

Bang Gu Ppong once rightfully said, “Children must play immediately. Children must be healthy immediately. Children must be happy immediately.” The rebellious character who appeared in Episode 9 of Extraordinary Attorney Woo highlights the huge problem in the education system. He believes that adults manipulate laws to make children busier and they don’t get enough time to enjoy their childhood which is so true.

5. Our Blues (Netflix)

Our Blues starring Han Ji Min, Kim Woo Bin, Lee Byung Hun, Shin Min-a, Cha Seung Won, Lee Jung Eun, and Kim Hye Ja among others highlights many issues and one of them is teenage pregnancy. The fifth episode of the Korean series featuring Bae Hyung Sung and Roh Yoon Seo deals with the teen lovers’ unplanned pregnancy and the challenges they face when they decided to keep the baby.
