The Issue Behind Our Undying Love For Celebrities

We are fixated on celebrities because they live the life we aspire for and shows like Koffee With Karan are like a road that helps us to get closer to them and give us a sneak peek into their lives. We get to know our beloved celebrities along with all the juicy details and exploitive elements of their lives which make these, gossip-worthy, we talk about this for days, write articles on it, and share it on our socials. My question is if we love these people, why do we same to hate them, when they act like celebrities?

The high rating and viewership of the show can be associated with promotional appearances just like we used to witness with The Kapil Sharma Show. But still, it isn’t just the love that drags us to the screens. It’s the fact that we love to enjoy the gossip and the scandal that tools out with them, with a warm cup of tea. (Lady Whistledown is really on to something, huh?).

The Guilty Pleasure Syndrome

Whether you call it a cringe binge or a guilty pleasure, we all watch these shows and our hearts seem to thrive on all the controversial gossip. There’s a very obvious reason behind this ‘Guilty Pleasure Syndrome’ that we all seem to have developed. Shows like these give us a sense of reality and relatability, we witness moments where the celebrates drop their ‘celeb act’ and get real with the host and the audience as we hear about their problems, and witness their normal selves and relatable lives and, we love these moments.

Furthermore, These actors end up giving up an ‘inside scoop’ about their lives which makes us feel special. I mean, who wouldn’t like to hear the romantic story behind Ranbir’s proposal to Alia? We ship them as a couple and knowing how it occurred makes us feel ‘involved’ which just makes us love them more.

The Ugly Side Of These Shows

It’s a fact that not all celebrities get along and, sometimes, to pick up their viewership, these shows invite them together to a mutual environment with the aim to stir the pot. Sometimes, the hosts are even actively encouraging (and perhaps provoking) the celebrities to grasp the audience’s attention with an on-air argument or debate. Do you remember the major nepotism debate that occurred on air?

The juicy content of these shows makes us feed on them in hopes to learn more by diving inside the world of celebrities, even when it gets ugly. This gives birth to a gossip-hungry wrench inside us, that wants more and more, with no control. We, the children who were conditioned to stay away from gossip, forget those childhood lessons for an hour and just watch the show.

After watching Koffee With Karan and other shows like it, we can’t help but text our friends and discuss what happened in the episodes. This helps us escape our reality and the moment we come back to it, that’s when the guilt and the shame hit. This is what makes us pretend like we are not enjoying the show and, dislike the premise of it all.

The bottom line is that shows like these don’t offer anything substantial and rely entirely on celebrities, gossip around them and their controversial statements to make all the buzz. Well, I guess, the show is not truly meant to provide insights but more on the line of what can make the show cooking among the audience. So, morally speaking, we have to hate them but, we can’t help but love them, can we?
