The trailer of Ranbir Kapoor’s Shamshera is here for the world to watch and I’ll just say, it is surprisingly good. Making a grand comeback on the big screen, after his last blockbuster Sanju, the actor will be pitted against Sanjay Dutt’s character in their upcoming release–Shamshera. A mix of the old school, Bollywood drama, on-ground battles, dacoits and dance numbers, the trailer packages the essence of this movie well for us. It is the story of a man who rose from being a slave to a leader and a legend of his tribe. Set in 1871 the close to three minutes long trailer, takes us back to that particular time in India’s history and the fight for freedom.
‘A father’s legacy. A son’s destiny’ is how the tagline introduces us to the plot. Ranbir fills the frame with his aura, as he takes on a rugged look, with tattered, signature dacoit clothes, beard, long hair and intense surma-decorated eyes, that sneak through his muddy saafaa. The first scene introduces the heart of the film–Shamshera, played by Kapoor, as he rides a white horse, with an axe on his back. Wide landscapes, intense conversations and heavy dialogues weave the story together, as the trailer further introduces us to other key stars of the film–Sanjay Dutt and Vaani Kapoor.
The latter, in many ways, gives me flashes of Katrina Kaif’s character in Thugs Of Hindostan–Suraiyya. Pretty much packed with dance numbers, stunning lehengas, and romantic sequences with the hero Ranbir in the sea, Vaani Kapoor seems to be sticking to the ‘hero’s love interest category; in the film. Which I hope is not the case. As we move further, a glimpse of Sanjay Dutt gives goosebumps, as my colleague and I vouch for this antagonist throughout the trailer. Battling with Ranbir’s Shamshera, Sanjay Dutt’s character of a corrupt police officer is well-built with additional features of a shiv tilak and a Brahmin braid to suit his intense eyes, that need a plot line of their own. The concluding bit also teases the viewers about Ranbir’s double role in the film.

With many already comparing Ranbir’s Shamshera with Ranveer Singh’s Khilji look, I wanna say guys, both look hot. And no discussion post this. While the fast-paced trailer aims to deliver a lot more than I expected, it is interesting to see Mr Kapoor’s first attempt in an action genre. And it is both appealing and promising.
The film is directed by Karan Malhotra and is produced by Aditya Chopra. It is slated to release in theatres on July 22, 2022.
