Sean Bean Says Intimacy Coordinators “Spoils Spontaneity” While Shooting Sex Scenes. A Privileged White Male Has Spoken

By  |

One of the much-anticipated shows that are set to release this month is House of Dragons – a prequel to Game of Thrones that is based on Targaryen history. And this very reason is good enough for us to look at some of our favourite characters from GoT – and mine is the one and only Ned Stark played by Sean Bean. However, as much as I like the character, I don’t think I’m a fan of the actor himself. Why do you ask? Well, it is because of a recent comment that he passed. Recently, in an interview, Sean Bean gave his take on having an intimacy coordinator on the sets. He says that they “spoil the spontaneity” of shooting a sex scene. And it is such a stereotypical white male thing to say because why care about making women feel safe?

Sean Bean, who is famous for playing the role of Ned Stark in the hit fantasy show Game of Thrones based on George R. R. Martin, said in an interview that having an intimacy coordinator on the sets spoils the sex scene as they make it more technical rather than spontaneous.

Speaking about working with an intimacy coordinator, Sean Bean said, “It would inhibit me more because it’s drawing attention to things… Somebody saying, ‘do this, put your hands there, wily you touch his thing…’ I think the natural way lovers behave would be ruined by someone bringing it right down to a technical exercise”. To further prove his point, he compared his experience to the adaptation of Lady Chatterley’s Lover, saying it was spontaneous.

Sean Bean went on to say that during the time he was starred opposite Joely Richardson, they had fun as there was good chemistry between them and even though the two of them were married to their respective spouses they were just following the story and portraying the characters with as much truth and honesty as possible. When he was pointed out that the intimacy coordinators help to protect actors in the wake of the #MeToo movement, the actor sends it depends from actress to actress.

And this is exactly why actors, celebs, in fact, men like him are so problematic. Sean Bean literally is the epitome of a straight heterosexual white guy who believes that the comfort and security of women in their workplaces can be something they can compromise on. He is so ignorant that just “spontaneity” in the sex scenes can harm the performers for a lifetime.

What Sean Bean is also forgetting while making such an ignorant statement is that there are many people who can take advantage of these situations and hence having intimacy coordinators are extremely important. In fact, I’m glad that having them on set is now becoming the norm.
