Kritika Kamra Opens Up About Her Struggles In Bollywood, Says Casting On Web Is “More Organised”

Last year, we all experienced, and some of us even participated, in the debates revolving around nepotism within Bollywood. Alia Bhatt’s Sadak 2 trailer got a lot of backlash and even became one of the most disliked movie trailers on YouTube because of the actor being a product of nepotism. Not to mention the everlasting drama because of censorship. However, with the rise of OTT platforms, a loophole has been created. OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hotstar, Voot, etc have lenient to no real censorship (at least for now), giving creators the freedom to present their story the way they want. Moreover, it gives the creators much more autonomy in terms of writing and cast; paving the way for many actors that might not have luck being cast in Bollywood. Kritika Kamra seems to agree with me on this.

After working in the television industry for almost 10 years, Kritika Kamra got her first Bollywood break in Mitron in 2018. Kritika Kamra was recently seen in Ali Abbas Zafar’s Tandav on Amazon Prime Video. She has four web series in the pipeline as well. Based on her experience, she claims that the web is more “streamlined and fair” as compared to other mediums. She also stated that the process of casting for web series are more “organized.” According to Hindustan Times, Kamra says “The process of casting on the web is more organised. I’ve become a part of them because of my work and through auditions. That makes the web a more even playing field because making a web project is a collaborative effort and there are a lot of people deciding the cast. You audition and if things work out, you get shortlisted.”

Kritika Kamra has no problem admitting that she faced a lot of bias and prejudices while trying to audition for movies. She says the films as a medium aren’t very democratic. However, she says that she understands that films are a different type of business and a lot of the decisions made for movies depend upon the box office. Consequently, the box office also dictates who is cast in a movie.

While the debate around nepotism vs. self-made is still very much alive, I for one am pleased that budding stars like Kritika Kamra are getting their due recognition through OTP platforms and web series.
