5 Swoon-Worthy Julia Roberts Rom-Com That Raised Our Romantic Standards

A while back a read the news that Julia Roberts is going to be starring in a rom-com for the first time in 2 decades and it got me wondering about his long it has been since I’ve seen her brilliant acting and bright smile on-screen. And the more I thought, the more I missed all of her rom-coms which I spent my teens watching resulting in me having extremely high romantic standards as an adult. So I decided to make my nostalgia everyone’s problem making a list of my favorite Julia Roberts rom-coms which I will never get over.

Pretty Woman

Ahhhh this film! Other than the fact that I never stopped crushing on Edward Lewis, Vivian Ward has lived in my mind rent-free since I first saw her. Julia Roberts absolutely nailed all of Vivian: be it her sense of humor, her confidence, or her pain. Pretty Woman has all the makings of a brilliant rom-com – from hilarious and cute banters to romantic moments that will make you sigh. No matter how many times I’ve watched her in play Vivian  I’ll never get over it.

Runaway Bride

Julia’s character in this film is the definition of chaotic energy and I am fully here for it. Julia Roberts is the ultimate “I am not like other girls” female character but the way it has been portrayed seems natural and not condescending to the “other girls” in question.  Richard Gere is brilliant opposite Julia, as usual. She and Richard Gere once more offer the ideal amount of smart banter and the adversaries to lovers cliche. Julia Roberts is a woman with a seductive charisma and an aura of mystery in everything she does.

Notting Hill

This film gave us the most iconic rom-com dialgues of all times, “I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.” And Julia’s perfect delivery of the line is what makes it better. This film is has been one of my comfort films for a while and is like a warm hug on a cold day. It will make you feel emotions you didn’t know you had and I highly recommend you watch this classic, if you haven’t already.

Eat, Pray, Love

I remember that when this movie first came out, there were a lot of expectations for a book adaption of such a big international hit and it delivered. Julia Roberts made the ideal Liz. She was relatable, down-to-earth, and absolutely lovely. She and Javier Bardem made the ideal pairing for a film about romance, sex, and delicious cuisine. This is a perfect example of a movie where Julia performed with everything she has and her performance throughout the movie was flawless.

Valentine’s Day

I don’t care what you say but I have watched Valentine’s Day 100 times and will rewatch it 100 times more. All the stories within the film are so beautifully intertwined and with the wide range of characters and couples, you will surely find someone to relate to. While Julia’s character in this film doesn’t necessarily engage in any romantic relationships, her portrayal of a devoted mother working in the army who would do whatever it takes to come home to her son for Valentine’s is simply beautiful. And her banter with Bradley Cooper throughout their plane journey home is the cherry on top.

I remember never missing any Julia Roberts film on Romedy Now and parking my butt right by the TV every time she was on screen. And the funny part is, she still has that effect on me. Be it her charm, her undeniably amazing performances, her adorable giggles, or that toothy grin, I believe Julia Roberts has and will always have a hold on my heart like no other actress.
