James Franco Admits To Sleeping With Students, Opens Up About Struggle With Sex Addiction On Podcast

Addictions are a very slippery slope. Something that started off super harmlessly as just something for fun or a coping mechanism can easily start taking over someone, essentially ruining them and everything/everyone they cross paths with. While I don’t condone this kind of destructive and toxic behaviour, many times it is a genuine mistake where the person themself doesn’t see what they are doing wrong. Having talked about this, James Franco opened up on The Jess Cagle Podcast about the sexual assault allegations made against him four years ago and his struggle with sex addiction.

James Franco appeared on The Jess Cagle Podcast and spoke about the sexual exploitation and inappropriate conduct allegations against him made almost 4 years ago. This was his first proper remark or comment on the allegations made in 2018 by five women who deemed Franco’s conduct and behaviour inappropriate, as reported by the Los Angeles Times. Later in 2019, two women filed a civil lawsuit against Franco, accusing him of exploiting actors and coaxing them into doing sex scenes.

James Franco spoke about how after sobriety from his alcohol addiction, it was very easy for him to slip into having a sex addiction. He talked about how his fame and popularity had gotten him addicted to validation. Franco says that he ended up hurting a lot of people because of this. “I suppose at the time, my thinking was if it’s consensual, okay,” the actor said. He called his sex addiction “a powerful drug” and continued saying, “I got hooked on it for 20 more years. The insidious part of that is that I stayed sober from alcohol all that time.” Franco said that it was never his intention to hurt people.

As someone who has had her own struggles with mental health and is still trying to figure herself out, I applaud James Franco for being this open about this subject. I understand how difficult it is to come to terms with your own self and to be able to heal and make amends. However, his repent seems lacking because a lot about the accusations has not been discussed in this interview. Moreover, he hasn’t formally and publicly apologized to any of the victims (whether or not he did privately is not known). So while I don’t condone his actions, I am glad James Franco was able to see what he did wrong, his reasons and is working on himself. However, a lot seems to have been pushed under the rug which makes this all seem lowkey performative.
